Sacrum and profane in the Cracow urban space

Termin sacrum pomimo naukowych prób przypisania mu definicji i wtłoczenia w pewne ramy systemowe różnych dyskursów jest pojęciem niezwykle nieuchwytnym i silnie subiektywnym. Może być ono pojmowane zarówno w znaczeniu religijnym jak i niereligijnym. W niniejszej pracy, na podstawie różnych źródeł, przedstawiono rozmaite rozumienia pojęć sacrum i profanum w zależności od przyjętego dyskursu i dyscypliny naukowej. Następnie w celu zrozumienia relacji zachodzących pomiędzy sferami sacrum i profanum w Krakowie dokonano analizy trzech konkretnych przestrzeni: kompleksu Sanktuarium Bożego Miłosierdzia w Krakowie-Łagiewnikach, ulicy Grodzkiej oraz Cmentarza Rakowickiego. Ostatnim elementem niniejszej pracy było poznanie w jaki sposób mieszkańcy miasta postrzegają oraz rozróżniają przestrzenie sacrum i profanum. W tym celu przeprowadzono wywiady z klerykiem trzeciego roku formacji w Wyższym Seminarium Duchownym Archidiecezji Krakowskiej, byłą świadkiem Jehowy (obecnie agnostyczką) oraz z ateistką. W przypadku gdy sacrum występuje wiąże się z czymś wyjątkowym, niecodziennym, co wprawia w zadumę i skłania do refleksji, ale równocześnie wywołuje radość. Możliwe jest jednak zupełne niedoświadczanie sacrum przez człowieka oraz brak wartości i zjawisk, które byłyby adekwatne i na tyle silne, żeby określić je tym terminem. Sacrum nie jest ani materialne, ani fizyczne. Pomimo iż niezaprzeczalnie objawia się w przestrzeni miejskiej, jest jedynie wyrazem, formą oraz obudowaniem transcendencji doświadczanej indywidualnie lub zbiorowo przez społeczeństwo.

The term sacrum, despite scientific attempts to assign a definition to it and implement it into certain systemic frames of various discourses, is an extremely elusive and strongly subjective concept. Sacrum can be understood in both religious and non-religious meaning. In the above work, based on different sources, various understandings of the terms sacrum and profane are presented, depending on the discourse and scientific discipline adopted. Then, in order to understand the relations between the spheres of the sacrum and the profane in Cracow, three specific spaces were analyzed: the complex of the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy in Łagiewniki, Grodzka Street and the Rakowicki Cemetery. The last element of this work was to learn how the city residents perceive and distinguish between sacrum and profane spaces. For this purpose, interviews were conducted with a third year cleric in a catholic Seminary of the Archdiocese of Cracow, ex-Jehovah's witness who is currently an agnostic and with an atheist. If sacrum occurs, it is associated with something special, unusual, which makes us reverie and reflect, but at the same time evokes happiness. However, it is possible for the human to completely fail to experience the sacrum, and for lack of values and phenomena that would be adequate and strong enough to be described by this term. Sacrum is neither material nor physical. Although it undeniably manifests itself in urban space, it is only an expression, form and encapsulation of transcendence experienced individually or collectively by society.
