Non-temple buildings in the Greek sanctuaries and their functions

Tematem niniejszej pracy jest architektura świecka sanktuariów greckich. Jej zakres geograficzny obejmuje Grecję właściwą oraz wyspy Morza Egejskiego. Omawiane typy budowli powstawały od okresu archaicznego do okresu rzymskiego, choć niektóre ośrodki kultu istniały już w okresie mykeńskim, a upadały u progu wczesnego średniowiecza. Praca ta powstała z przekonania o potrzebie zgłębienia problemu funkcji użytkowych pewnych typów budowli, które wznoszono w greckich sanktuariach. Są to obiekty nie posiadające charakteru kultowego. Pełniły one jednak określone funkcje, związane z wewnętrznym zarządzaniem sanktuarium, odbywającymi się w nim uroczystościami oraz z gromadzeniem darów wotywnych. Budynki te były więc pośrednio związane z życiem religijnym danego ośrodka kultu – celem jego egzystencji.Budowle świeckie wznoszone przez Greków w ich sanktuariach są wyrazem rozwoju tych ośrodków nie tylko w sferze architektury i sztuki. Ilość i różnorodność tych obiektów świadczy o potędze danego sanktuarium, o jego znacznym udziale w życiu zarówno religijnym, jak i politycznym Hellady. W przypadku sanktuariów panhelleńskich polityka i kult bardzo często wyraźnie się przenikały i łączyły. Delfy są doskonałym tego przykładem.

The subject of this work is a secular architecture of the Greek sanctuaries. Its geographical range contains Mainland Greece and the islands of the Aegean Sea. Discussed types of buildings were built from the Archaic period to the Roman times, although some sacred places existed already in the Mycenaean period and collapsed in the early Middle Ages. This work was made in the conviction of need to investigate the problem of the utilitarian functions of some types of the buildings which were built in the Greek sanctuaries. These are edifices without any character of the cult. However, they performed definite functions connected with the administration of the sanctuary, ceremonies performed there and collecting of the donations. According to it, these buildings were indirectly linked to worship activity of most of the sacred places – object of their existence.Secular buildings built by the Greeks in their sanctuaries express the development of these places not only in the architecture and art. Quantity and variety of these edifices evidence of power of the centres of the cult and its significant participation in worship and political activity of Greece. In the case of the Pan-Hellenic sanctuaries politics and cult penetrated and united to each other very often. Let’s take Delphi as a brilliant example.
