The Image of American Family in Cartoons for Adults, based on 'The Simpsons’ and 'Rick and Morty"

Celem pracy licencjackiej jest scharakteryzowanie przedstawień rodziny amerykańskiej, ukazywanych w wybranych serialach animowanych dla dorosłych. Praca odpowiada na pytania dotyczące ewolucji tego obrazu oraz definiuje sitcom jako gatunek, z którego wywodzą się omawiane seriale animowane. Wykorzystaną metodą badawczą jest analiza literatury naukowej oraz poszczególnych odcinków. Zgromadzone materiały dowodzą, że zmiany kulturowo-społeczne, wpłynęły na przestrzeni lat na ukazywany obraz rodziny amerykańskiej. Serial „The Simpsons” zrewolucjonizował formę i wpłynął na rozwój sitcomów animowanych. Obraz amerykańskiej rodziny w animacjach skierowanych do dojrzałego odbiorcy różni się w analizowanych produkcjach. Charakterystyczną jego cechą, widoczną zarówno w „The Simpsons”, jak i „Rick and Morty” jest model rodziny dysfunkcyjnej.

The purpose of this study was to characterize the portrayals of the American family in selected cartoons for adults. This study reveals the evolution of this image and defines sitcom as a genre of the discussed cartoons. Analysis of scientific literature and individual episodes of the shows was used as a method for this research. The collected materials show that the socio-cultural changes that happened through the years affected the image of family on television. ‘The Simpsons’ revolutionized the cartoon form and influenced the development of animated sitcoms. The portrayals of the American families in cartoons for adults differ between the two analyzed shows. Its characteristic quality, seen both in ‘The Simpsons’ and ‘Rick and Morty’ is the dysfunctional family model.
