Environmental History of the Tatra Mountains. Wind "Halny" as a Natural Disturbance Shaping the Tatra Forest Ecosystem

Niniejsza praca stanowi próbą podjęcia tematu środowiskowej historii Tatr ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem nieludzkich aktorów – świerka i halnego. Autorka opisuje historyczne procesy społeczno-kulturalne, takie jak przemysł górniczo-hutniczy na Podhalu, masowy wypas owiec w tatrach oraz powstanie Tatrzańskiego Parku Narodowego, które przyczyniły się do znacznej przebudowy tatrzańskich drzewostanów. W pracy opisywane są również dwa wiatry halny – pierwszy z maja 1968 roku i drugi z grudnia 2013 roku. Przemiany struktury leśnej w Tatrach analizowane są z perspektywy ekologii zaburzeń, dzięki której narzędziom autorka w subwersywny sposób przechwytuje pejoratywną nomenklaturę związaną z katastrofami naturalnymi.

This paper is an attempt to delve into the environmental history of the Tatra Mountains, with particular emphasis on non-human actors such as spruce trees and the mountain wind called "halny". The author describes historical socio-cultural processes, such as mining and metallurgical industry in the Podhale region, extensive sheep grazing in the Tatras, and the establishment of the Tatra National Park, all of which have contributed to significant transformations in the Tatra Forest stands. The work also discusses two specific occurrences of the halny wind: one in May 1968 and another in December 2013. The changes in the forest structure in the Tatras are analyzed from the perspective of disturbance ecology, through which the author employs subversive means to challenge the pejorative terminology associated with natural disasters.
