The suffering of Olympia : a corporeal account of self by Katarzyna Kozyra

Niniejszy artykuł stanowi analizę fragmentu dzieła "Olimpia" Katarzyny Kozyry, stanowiącego intertekstualne nawiązanie do obrazu Édouarda Maneta. Posiłkując się teoriami Judith Butler, dotyczącymi etycznych i relacyjnych uwarunkowań dawania świadectwa siebie, a także teorią cielesnej piśmienności, sformułowaną przez Maaike Bleeker, rozważam potencjalną subwersywność gestu artystki, podejmującej krytyczny dialog z zachodnim kanonem sztuki i patriarchalnie nacechowaną tradycją europejskiego aktu. W mojej pracy wykorzystałam również obserwacje z dziedziny humanistyki medycznej oraz fenomenologii, poruszające temat sprawstwa podmiotu chorego oraz kobiecego wobec ograniczającego sytemu konwencji i norm społecznych.

The aim of this article is to analyze an artwork by contemporary Polish artist Katarzyna Kozyra entitled "Olimpia", referring to Édouard Manet’s groundbreaking painting. In my analysis I focus especially on the subversive potential of the piece, which inscribes the diseased female body onto the Western canon of nude paintings, famously described by John Berger as inherently oppressive structures of patriarchal domination. Exploring the possibility of emancipation in Kozyra's gesture, I draw on the theories of giving an account of oneself by Judith Butler and the term corporeal literacy, coined by Maaike Bleeker. Insights from medical humanities and phenomenology provide a useful framework in trying to determine the potentiality of re-claiming one's sick, female body, regaining its agency and the ability to speak for itself, breaching the oppressive structure of the canon.
