Reading Dorota Masłowska’s The Queen’s Peacock as a postmodern novel

Celem niniejszej pracy jest stworzenie możliwie spójnego systemu strategii literatury postmodernistycznej i zastosowanie go do analizy powieści polskiej pisarki współczesnej Doroty Masłowskiej – Pawia królowej. Praca ma ukazać korzyści płynące ze spojrzenia na ową powieść z takiej perspektywy i pomóc w wyeksponowaniu niewidocznych wcześniej aspektów.Autor bada funkcje wyeksponowania języka oraz zastosowania jego niestandardowych użyć, a także strategie mające na celu dekonstrukcję fikcji literackiej i tym samym wpływające na jej samozwrotny i metafikcyjny charakter. Praca stara się wyjaśnić sens zastosowania technik powodujących zaburzenie ciągłości i jednorodności tekstu, środków o charakterze kolażowym – takich jak pluralizm stylistyczny i światopoglądowy. Analizuje metody wprowadzające zaburzenie, wielokrotność i niejednoznaczność, próbuje zrozumieć wykorzystanie w przestrzeni powieściowej nadmiaru, przesytu, użycia metod, poprzez które dochodzi do zagubienia i być może irytacji czytelnika.Praca rozpatruje pojawiające się rodzaje narracji oraz sposoby konstruowania bohaterów. Rozważa, jak, wraz z nadejściem postmodernizmu, zmienia się świadomość, sytuacja, rola autora oraz jego odbiorcy, i jakie odzwierciedlenie te przeobrażenia mają w tekście.Wskazane strategie niejednokrotnie badane są w odniesieniu do literatury modernistycznej, jednym razem jako wywodzące się z jej tradycji, innym – jako będące sprzeciwem wobec niej. Jedną z najważniejszych kategorii występujących w pracy stanowi dominanta, za pomocą której łatwiejsze staje się wytłumaczenie zjawisk w omawianej powieści. Pozwala ona zrozumieć, w jaki sposób dokonuje się przejście między literaturą modernistyczną, cechującą się dominantą epistemologiczną, a postmodernistyczną, dla której typowa jest dominanta ontologiczna. Praca w dużej mierze skupia się zatem na omawianiu występujących w powieści zabiegów mających na celu uwypuklenie granic ontologicznych między światami (fikcji i rzeczywistości czy też autora i czytelnika). W pracy pojawiają się zagadnienia z obszarów filozofii i socjologii, które pozwalają właściwie objąć obraz postmodernizmu. Mają one jednak charakter uzupełniający. Obecne są także odniesienia do tematyk związanych z ponowoczesnością, implikowanego przez nią nowego rozumienia czasu. To zaś wiąże się z nieselektywnością, znajdującą odzwierciedlenie w omawianej powieści. Autor bada, jak w kontekście nowych warunków rzeczywistości można rozumieć mimetyczność literatury.

The purpose of this work is to create a possbily coherent system of postmodern literature strategies and apply it to the analysis of the contemporary novel by Polish writer Dorota Masłowska – The Queen’s Peacock. The author aims to show benefits of reading the novel from this perspective and to expose its aspects, that were previously unseen.The author examines the functions of non-standard uses of the language, as well as strategies aimed at the deconstruction of fiction and thus affecting its self-referential and metafictional character. The work tries to explain the meaning of the use of techniques bringing disruption of continuity and uniformity to the text, use of collage techniques - such as the stylistic and ideological pluralism. It analyzes the methods of introducing disorder, multiplication and ambiguity.The work examines different forms of narrative and how characters are constructed. It’s considered how, with the advent of postmodernism, consciousness, the situation, and the role of the author and his audience have changed, and how these transformations are reflected in the text.Strategies are often examined in relation to the modern literature, often times as derived from its traditions, in other situations - as opposing to it. One of the most important categories of the work is a dominant, which makes it easier to explain many phenomenas of this novel. It allows us to understand the transition between modern literature, characterized by epistemological dominant, and postmodern, for which ontological dominant is representative. The work largely focuses on discussing novel treatments aimed at exposing ontological boundaries between the worlds (of fiction and reality, or the author and the reader).There are references to areas of philosophy and sociology, that allow capturing more accurate picture of postmodernism. However, they are supplementary. The work in some measure talks about post-modernity (in a sociological sense), for example about a new understanding of a time, which it brings. This is associated with unselectivity, reflected in the novel. The author explores how mimecity of a literature might be understood in the context of the new conditions of reality.
