The perception of life by the residents of the nursing houses

Praca traktuje o społecznych, psychologicznych i biologicznych aspektach starości. Podejmuje tematykę polityki społecznej realizowanej w Polsce na rzecz osób starszych, a także zwraca uwagę na kategorię jakości życia.Głównym celem pracy było określenie percepcji własnego życia przez mieszkańców domów pomocy społecznej, którą zoperacjonalizowano do: oceny jakości życia, poczucia sensu życia, poczucia osamotnienia, a także zadowolenie z miejsca pobytu.Wyniki badań przeprowadzonych metodą sondażu diagnostycznego na grupie czterdziestu osób starszych mieszkających w DPS pozwalają wnioskować, iż seniorzy mają pozytywny stosunek do swojego życia. Korzystne postrzeganie swojej sytuacji życiowej przez większość seniorów łączy się z wysoką jakością życia, niskim poczuciem osamotnienia, zdecydowaną akceptacją miejsca zamieszkania oraz wysokim poczuciem sensu życia.Działalność domów pomocy społecznej jest optymalna z punktu widzenia oceny ich mieszkańców, jednak można ją wzmacniać poprzez zwracanie uwagi na potrzeby mieszkańców DPS i ich wypełnianie. Należy zachęcać ludzi starszych do aktywnego uczestnictwa w życiu społecznym i zapewniać im stałe kontakty z innymi ludźmi. Dzięki temu będą czuli się potrzebni, a ich jakość życia będzie utrzymywać się na wysokim poziomie.

The aim of this thesis is to discuss the social, psychological and biological aspects of old age. The thesis examines the theme of the social policy toward the old people which is realized in Poland and also it draws attention to the category of the life quality.The main purpose of this thesis is to determine the perception of lives by the residents of the nursing houses. The perception was characterized by four features: the assessment of the life quality, the sense of living, the sense of isolation and the satisfaction from the place of living.The results of the research conducted on the basis of the diagnostic survey method in the group of 40 old residents of the nursing house allow us to confer that the senior citizens have a positive attitude towards their lives. The positive perception of their life situation by the majority of the elderly residents is connected with the high standard of living, the low sense of isolation, the strong acceptation of the place of living and the high sense of living in general.The activity of the nursing houses is optimal from the point of view of their residents but it may be strengthened by paying attention to the needs of the residents and the fulfillment of these needs. The elderly should be encouraged to the active participation in the social life, also the constant contact with other people should be provided. Thanks to those measures they would feel needed and the high level of the quality of life will be sustained.
