The untranslatability of context: «Tales of Galicia» by Andrzej Stasiuk.

Niniejsza praca skupia się na badaniu treści kulturowych w procesie tłumaczenia literackiego. Pracę oparłam na "Opowieściach galicyjskich" Andrzeja Stasiuka. Pracę zaczynam od przedstawienia pisarza i jego dzieła, a także sylwetek tłumaczy, Agnieszki Żuk i Laurenta Alaux, którzy przetłumaczyli książkę na język francuski. Następnie przechodzę do rozdziału teoretycznego w którym podejmuję tezy wybitnych językoznawców zajmujących się kulturową stroną tłumaczeń. W pracy podejmuję także problematykę słów kulturowych, realiów i kulturemów. Rozdział teoretyczny kończy się opracowaniem tabeli zawierającej strategie tłumaczenia treści kulturowych, mogącej posłużyć pomocą tłumaczom literackim mającym do czynienia z dziełami naznaczonymi kulturowo. W drugiej części mojej pracy podejmują analizę dzieła z praktycznego punktu widzenia. "Opowieści galicyjskie" są dobrym przykładem książki głęboko zakorzenionej w konkretnej rzeczywistości, a zatem wypełnionej słowami kulturowymi. Analiza zawiera liczne fragmenty książki wraz z ich tłumaczeniem na francuski, a także omówienie wyborów podejmowanych przez tłumaczy. Kończąc pracę podejmuję próbę krytyki tłumaczenia książki na francuski, wraz z jej oceną i generalną uwagą na temat tłumaczenia kontekstu kulturowego w dziełach literatury.

This work focuses on the study of the cultural in literary translation and will be based on Andrzej Stasiuk’s Tales of Galicia as an example. We will begin by introducing the author and his work as well as Agnieszka Zuk and Laurent Alaux, the couple of translators who translated this book in French. We will then go on with a theoretical chapter aiming at summing up the works of famous linguists on cultural translation. That is how we will be led to explore the notions of realia and cultureme. This theoretical chapter will end up with the study of several literary translation strategies, which could serve as references for a translator willing to work on a culturally marked text. The second part of this work will be practical and will be based on a thorough study of the several levels of cultural content we can find in Tales of Galicia, this book being an eloquent example of a cultural text. After our analysis, which will be illustrated by many abstracts from the original text, we will try to give an explanation of the choices the translators have made. We will also analyze some of their mistakes or omissions, which can result from a lack of information or by not using the appropriate translation strategy. Finally we will conclude with a short critic and an assessment of the work done by Tales of Galicia’s translators and we will finish this study by providing a more general feedback on cultural translation.

Ce travail se concentre sur l’étude du culturel présent dans la traduction littéraire, avec pour exemple les Contes de Galicie d’Andrzej Stasiuk. Nous commencerons cette analyse par une présentation de l’auteur et de son œuvre ainsi que d’Agnieszka Zuk et Laurent Alaux, le couple de traducteurs qui a réalisé la traduction française de cet ouvrage. Nous poursuivrons avec un chapitre théorique qui aura pour but de résumer les travaux que de célèbres linguistes ont consacré à l’étude de la traduction du culturel. C’est ainsi que nous serons amenés à étudier les notions de realia et de culturème. Ce chapitre théorique s’achèvera enfin sur l’étude de différentes stratégies de traduction littéraire, qui pourront servir de référence à un traducteur voulant entreprendre la traduction d’un texte marqué culturellement. La deuxième partie sera pratique et se basera sur une étude approfondie des différents niveaux d’apparition du culturel dans les Contes de Galicie, cette œuvre constituant un exemple éloquent d’un texte culturel. Notre analyse, enrichie de nombreux extraits de l’œuvre originale, sera suivie d’une tentative d’explication des choix des traducteurs et de quelques-unes de leurs fautes ou omissions, pouvant résulter d’une lacune d’information de leur part ou de la non-utilisation de la stratégie de traduction adéquate. Enfin nous conclurons par une courte critique et une évaluation de la traduction effectuée par les traducteurs des Contes de Galicie et nous finirons avec un avis plus général au sujet de la traduction du culturel.
