The topic of this thesis is British propaganda of the Great war in the poetry of Wilfred Owen and Henry Newbolt as well as selected non-literary sources. It places the sources within the socio-political context of the times and presents how certain themes and stories were used by the British Propaganda Bureau to influence people. It strives to show two sides of the story, the manipulations of the propagandists are juxtaposed with the truth to expose the methods of the Bureau, which are expanded upon by examination of the work of selected war correspondents. The non-literary examples used in the thesis are stories, rumours and lies circulated among the public and exploited by the authorities to provoke certain reactions such as patriotism or hatred. The works of the two poets are compared and contrasted in the manner of a dialogue between authors, with certain poems rebuking and answering each other. The analysis of the poems exposes certain running themes and examines their different portrayal by each author, as well as creates a running storyline between poems, in which a young soldier’s life is traced from his deployment until his death and return to England. The same themes and figures in Newbolt’s pastoral poetry are juxtaposed with Owen’s graphic realism, exposing the lies and manipulations of the establishment.
