Opis traumy rodzinnej w dziele Ann Patchett Dom Holendrów

Celem mojej pracy jest zbadanie i zidentyfikowanie sposobów w jaki trauma została przedstawiona w noweli Ann Patchett Dom Holendrów. Obszary mojego badania obejmują traumę, rodzinę i pamięć, z uwzględnieniem dziedziny hauntologii. W pracy analizowane jest pochodzenie i historia terminu traumy, niedoskonałościami ludzkiej pamięci, siły oddziaływujące pomiędzy członkami rodzinki oraz nowoczesne podejście do sfery hauntologii. W pierwszej części pracy badany jest sposób w jaki autorka stworzyła portrety psychologiczne głównych postaci. Umożliwia to wgląd w fizyczne i psychiczne znamiona jakie pozostawiła po sobie opisana w dziele trauma z dzieciństwa. W pracy rozpoznana zostaje symboliczna rola domu, przedstawiona jest sytuacja kobiet w okresie po drugiej wojnie światowej i porównane zostają różnice między różnymi klasami społecznymi. Podkreślona zostaje rola domu rodzinnego jako opiekuna, jak i jego niemal magiczne właściwości. Różnorodne środki stylistyczne takie jak powtórzenie, metafora, personifikacja czy sarkazm zostają wymienione i badane pod względem ich roli w opisie traumy. Analiza sposobów w jaki trauma została przedstawiona w noweli Ann Patchett “Dom Holendrów” potwierdza, że liczne środki stylistyczne, kreacja portretów psychologicznych głównych bohaterów oraz nadawanie podwójnych znaczeń przedmiotom oraz zjawiskom posłużyło autorce do opisu traumy w przedstawionym dziele. Co więcej, praca dostarcza przyczyn oraz krótko i długotrwałych konsekwencji traumy doświadczonej w dzieciństwie.

The aim of the thesis is to investigate and identify the ways in which trauma is depicted in Ann Patchett’s novel The Dutch House. The research areas for the thesis are trauma, family and memory studies, with a reference to hauntology. The origins of trauma, imperfections of human memory, forces within a household and modern approach to the theme of haunting are presented. In the first part, the way psychological portraits of the protagonists are created by the author is analysed. This gives insight into mental and physical scars that are the results of domestic trauma. The thesis identifies the symbolic role of the house, the description of women’s oppression after the Second World War and class differences in the US of that period. The position of the house as a guardian, but also its haunting features are underlined. Numerous stylistic devices such as repetitions, metaphors, personifications and sarcasm are analysed and listed as the way of depicting trauma in a literary work. The examination of the ways in which trauma is depicted in Ann Patchett’s novel “The Dutch House” carried out in this thesis proves that there are various measures of including trauma in a literary work, mainly through the creation of the psychological portraits of the characters, implementation of second meaning and human roles to the objects and usage of repetition, metaphor and personification. The research results additionally provide reasons and long-lasting consequences for the domestic trauma experienced in childhood.
