The religious brick architecture of the Telatyn commune. A historical overview and an architectural description
budownictwo sakralne, kościół prawosławny, kościół katolicki, architektura, gmina Telatyn
religious brick architecture, orthodox church, catholic church, architecture, Telatyn community
The goal of this paper is to present the history of sacral architecture currently existing within the Telatyn region, through the perspective of history of the region. With this goal in mind the author carried out visits to Telatyn Regional Hall, National Archives, and Parochial Offices, as well as conducted interviews with the residents of towns in this region. The gathered primary source information, along with reports and research papers concerned with the topics of art history and the history of Poland, allowed the author to form a comprehensive description of the history and character of these sanctuaries. The buildings with which the author is concerned with are those which were privately funded by proprietors of individual towns and originally established as Ukrainian Greek Catholic Churches. The result of this paper is a description of the history of these sanctuaries as well as an architectural analysis of the appearance of each one. In 1875 all of the buildings became Eastern Orthodox Churches, and closed in 1915. Their status changed again just after the end of World War I, and these buildings began to function as Roman Catholic Churches. Two of these sanctuaries have served this role to this day, while another has only returned to functioning as a Roman Catholic Church after over 50 years of operating as a school. The history of the Republic of Poland, and more specifically, the history of the Lubelskie Region; The Partitions, First and Second World Wars left an undeniable mark upon these sanctuaries as well. Until the forties of the twentieth century, this terrain was not homogenous in terms of ethnicity or culture. The towns were populated by residents who used many different languages and belonged to different groups within the Christian religion. The sanctuaries were frequented by believers of great ethnic, cultural and religious variety, this too had its lasting effect upon their course through history.
