Krytyka Totalitaryzmu w Folwarku Zwierzęcym i Roku 1984 George’a Orwella

Niniejsza praca magisterska poświęcona jest analizie Folwarku Zwierzęcego i Roku 1984 George’a Orwella, jako krytyki systemów totalitarnych. Celem tej pracy jest ukazanie, iż te dwa arcydzieła nowoczesnej literatury tworzą nie tylko polityczny, ale przede wszystkim moralny manifest autora. Poprzez kreację dwóch dystopijnych światów autor chciał obnażyć ogólne mechanizmy charakterystyczne dla totalitarnej władzy i sformułować ostrzeżenie dla światowej społeczności. Czerpiąc z własnego doświadczenia i przekonań politycznych, pragnął pokazać jak rewolucja i jej początkowe ideały mogą zostać wypaczone i spowodować powstanie światów dystopijnych. Chociaż systemy totalitarne pojawiające się w obydwu utworach były wzorowane na istniejących reżimach, to ich siła oddziaływania leży głównie w ich uniwersalności i ponadczasowości. W rozdziale pierwszym ukazane jest tło powstania obydwu książek poprzez przedstawienie pokrótce życia George’a Orwella wraz z klimatem politycznym tamtych czasów. Kolejny rozdział skupia się na Folwarku Zwierzęcym, metaforze zwierząt, jako głównych bohaterów, odwołaniach do historii oraz zanalizowaniu jak rządy totalitarne wpływają na swoich obywateli. Ostatni, trzeci rozdział poświęcony jest analizie przesłania Roku 1984 ze szczególnym naciskiem na konstrukcję przedstawionego świata oraz jego wpływ na społeczeństwo, a zwłaszcza na głównego bohatera – Winstona Smitha.

The subject of this thesis is the analysis of George Orwell’s Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four as a critique on totalitarian systems. The aim of this work is to show that the two masterpieces of modern literature form the author’s not only a political but, above all, moral manifesto. By creating the two dystopian worlds, the author wanted to expose the general mechanisms that are characteristic to a totalitarian rule and issue a warning against them to the world society. He drew on his personal experience and political convictions to present how the revolution and its ideals can be deviated and result in a dystopian world. Although modelled on the example of functioning systems, the power of the fictions lies largely in their universality and timelessness. The first chapter gives the background of the two works by presenting briefly the life of George Orwell as well as the political climate of those times. The next chapter is focused on Animal Farm, the metaphor of the animals, the references to history and exploring how a totalitarian rule affects its subjects. The final chapter is devoted to the analysis of the message of Nineteen Eighty-Four with a special focus on the construction of the presented world and its influence on the society and, especially, the main protagonist – Winston Smith.
