Self-image and acceptance of illness in cancer patients

Praca stanowi próbę przeprowadzenia charakterystyki kontekstu psychologicznego doświadczenia choroby nowotworowej, uwzględniającej aspekty osobowościowe, sposoby radzenia sobie ze stresem, poczucie skuteczności, satysfakcję z życia oraz poziom akceptacji choroby i ewentualny wzrost posttraumatyczny badanych osób. Część teoretyczna zawiera ogólny opis sposobów radzenia sobie, analizę procesu kształtowania tożsamości jednostki, a także zagadnienia powiązane z przeżywaniem choroby, satysfakcją z życia oraz poznawczymi aspektami przeżywania choroby. Chorobę nowotworową charakteryzuje jako sytuację trudną i traumatyczną. Część empiryczna pracy przedstawia opis studium przypadku pięciu osób chorujących onkologicznie oraz interpretację wyników, uzyskanych przez osoby badane w zakresie pogłębionego wywiadu ustrukturyzowanego oraz metod kwestionariuszowych: AIS, BHI-12, Mini-COPE, SWLS, Drabiny Cantrila oraz GSES. Celem pracy jest przedstawienie charakterystyki sposobów radzenia sobie oraz ich relacji z tożsamością jednostki w trakcie oraz po ukończeniu leczenia choroby nowotworowej. Istotnym aspektem uwzględnianym w pracy jest poziom akceptacji choroby, poznawcze aspekty funkcjonowania w trakcie leczenia oraz poziom nadziei podstawowej i satysfakcji z życia badanych.

This Master's Thesis is an attempt to characterize the psychological context of the experience of cancer, taking into account personality aspects, ways of coping with stress, sense of efficacy, satisfaction with life and the level of acceptance of the disease and possible posttraumatic growth of the subjects.The theoretical part contains a general description of coping mechanisms used in stressful situations, an analysis of the process of shaping the identity of the individual, as well as issues related to experiencing the disease, satisfaction with life and cognitive aspects of experiencing the disease. Cancer is characterized as a difficult and traumatic situation.The empirical part of the work presents a description of a case study of five people with oncological diseases and an interpretation of the results obtained by the subjects in the scope of in-depth structured interview and questionnaire methods: AIS, BHI-12, Mini-COPE, SWLS, Cantril's Ladder and GSES.The aim of the work is to present the characteristics of the coping mechanisms and their relations with the identity of the individual during and after the completion of cancer treatment. An important aspect taken into account in the work is the level of acceptance of the disease, cognitive aspects of functioning during treatment and the level of measured hope and life satisfaction of the respondents.
