The British-French Treaty of Dunkirk : negotiations and ratification

Traktat z Dunkierki Francja i Wielka Brytania podpisały 4 marca 1947 r. po długotrwałych rozmowach toczonych od jesieni 1944 r. Wielka Brytania z myślą o bezpieczeństwie powojennej Europy także wobec radzieckiej ekspansji dążyła do sojuszu z Francją. Francuscy politycy widzieli korzyści płynące z zawarcia takiego sojuszu, jednak na przeszkodzie jego podpisania stanęły rozbieżności w polityce obu państw na trenie Niemiec i Bliskiego Wschodu. Gen. Charles de Gaulle zamierzał najpierw uzgodnić istniejące problemy, a następnie podpisać sojusz. Tego stanowiska nie akceptowała Wielka Brytania. Odejście od władzy w Wielkiej Brytanii Churchilla, a we Francji de Gaulle’a stworzyły dogodną sytuację do zawarcia sojuszu. Sojusz ograniczał się do wzajemnej pomocy na wypadek wojny z Niemcami. Wielka Brytania odmówiła wzięcia na siebie większych zobowiązań, niż w sojuszu z ZSRR.

After a long process of negotiations, which started in autumn 1944, Great Britain and France signed the Dunkirk Treaty on March 1947. Great Britain aimed at an alliance with France for security reasons in post-war Europe as well aware of all the profits such an alliance could bring, there was a significant obstacle to overcome: the two countries disagreed on their policies in Germany and the Middle East. General Charles de Gaulle intended to overcome all the disagreements before singing the treaty, Great Britain, however, did not accept this position. Churchill's departure from office in Great Britain and de Gaulle's in France proved to be very fortuitous for the achievement of the alliance. The treaty though, was confined to a declaration of mutual support in case of war with Germany; Great Britain refused to take any more substantial obligations to France than had been agreed in its treaty with the Soviet Union.
