Dynamics of perturbations of three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter spacetime

thesis
This thesis presents results of studies of scalar perturbations of three-dimensional Anti-de Sitter spacetime. From the PDE viewpoint three is the critical dimension for the Einstein equations. A consequence of this fact is the existence of a finite energy threshold for black hole formation in the presence of a negative cosmological constant. Therefore, perturbations can be divided into three groups: perturbations above the threshold, perturbations below it and perturbations lying at the threshold. With a mixture of analytical spectral methods and numerical methods, it is shown that small perturbations, below the threshold, remain globally regular, but develop finer spatial scales and gradually lose smoothness due to the weak turbulence. This process can go forever only in three dimensions, because for sufficiently small perturbations it cannot be cut off by a black hole formation. On the other hand, numerical simulations give evidence that perturbations above the threshold for black hole formation collapse to a black hole as in higher dimensional case. When the collapse occurs the mass of a resulting black hole approaches the mass of the spacetime and the geometry outside the horizon approaches the BTZ black hole. Studies of the critical behavior at the threshold for black hole formation confirms and extends previous results. Results obtained in numerical simulations suggest that the critical solution is self-similar and exhibits a mass scaling power law. The self-similar solution describing the critical solution can be found analytically after neglecting the cosmological constant. On the other hand, its presence is crucial for the gravitational collapse in the three-dimensional case. Therefore, this description can be only approximately correct. An attempt to construct asymptotically self-similar solution is presented but results are not conclusive and this problem remains open.pl

Metody uzyte do tych badan sa kombinacja metod numerycznych i analitycznych. Z tych powodów problem krytycznego kolapsu w trójwymiarowej czasoprzestrzeni anty-de Sittera pozostaje otwarty.pl
