"Testament of Youth" Very Brittain: Autobiografia Feministyczna?

W momencie wybuchu Pierwszej Wojny Światowej Vera Brittain była dwudziestolatką i przygotowywała się do podjęcia studiów na Uniwersytecie Oksfordzkim. Jednak wojna zmieniła życie jej i jej bliskich na tyle drastycznie, że postanowiła opisać swoje wspomnienia wojenne w książce Testament of Youth: An Autobiographical Study of the Years 1900‐1925, która zyskała miano najważniejszej autobiografii feministycznej w literaturze tamtego okresu. Niniejsza praca skupia się na mnogości opisów bliskich relacji Very Brittain z mężczyznami oraz jej stosunku względem wojny i edukacji, które są przedstawione w książce. Celem tej pracy jest zweryfikowanie, czy Testament of Youth spełnia kryteria autobiografii feministycznej. Analiza została dokonana na podstawie wybranych aspektów życia Very Brittain w kontekście obecności w nich założeń feministycznych.

When First World War outbroke Vera Brittain was twenty years old and preparing to study at the University of Oxford. The war changed her and her close ones’ lives so drastically that she decided to describe her war memories in her work Testament of Youth: An Autobiographical Study of the Years 1900‐1925 which became the most important feminist autobiography in the literature of that period. This dissertation is focused on the multitude of depictions of Vera Brittain’s close relationships with men and her attitude towards the war and education that are presented in the book. This paper’s aim is to verify whether Testament of Youth fulfils the criteria of feminist autobiography by analysing selected aspects of Vera Brittain’s life in the context of the presence of the feminist premises.
