Elementy przyrody w powieści "Frankenstein" autorstwa Mary Shelley

Celem niniejszej pracy jest udowodnienie, iż przyroda jest ważnym elementem w powieści „Frankenstein” autorstwa Mary Shelley oraz wyjaśnienie znaczenia jej licznych, uwidocznionych przejawów i ich interpretacja pod kątem metaforycznym. W pierwszym rozdziale zawarta została analiza gór oraz górskiego krajobrazu, który wydaje się mieć znaczący wpływ na stan umysłu oraz odczucia tytularnego bohatera – Victora Frankenestein’a. W drugim rozdziale przeprowadzono analizę fragmentów, w których widoczna jest obecność żywiołu ognia i lodu oraz nadane jest im znaczenie metaforyczne. Ponadto, przeanalizowano również połączenie tych dwóch, przeciwstawnych elementów, które przejawia się w każdej z trzech narracji w powieści. W trzecim rozdziale zbadany został powracający obraz wody, który w swoich różnych odsłonach zdaje się mieć wpływ na bohaterów. Wnioski analizy wydają się być zgodne z założeniem, iż natura w powieści Mary Shelley jest kluczowym elementem tworzącym jej metaforykę.

The aim of this thesis is to prove that the elements of nature in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein play an important role in the creation of the novel’s imagery. Their meaning, as well as their metaphorical use is also explained. Additionally, the analysis of the influence of nature on the characters has been conducted. The first, out of the three chapters deals with the meaning of the mountainous landscape in the novel, and its effect of the eponymous character –Victor Frankenstein. The second, consists of an analysis of the elements of fire and ice, together with examination of instances of the reconciliation of opposites, in each of the three narratives in Frankenstein. Finally, the third chapter, serves as a demonstration of different manifestations of the element of water and their interpretation. The conclusion is that, the elements of nature, are indeed essential to the understanding of the novel.
