'Prócz nich nie wiedział nikt': Sartriańskie podejście do miłości odzwierciedlone w wybranych dziełach Johna Fowlesa

Głównym celem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie wpływu Jean-Paula Sartre’a na dzieła Johna Fowlesa. Moja praca traktuje o miłości skonceptualizowanej przez Jeana-Paula Sartre’a, odzwierciedlonej w dziełach Johna Fowlesa zatytułowanych Kolekcjoner oraz Mag.We wstępie przedstawiam sylwetkę Johna Roberta Fowlesa: jego najważniejsze literackie osiągniecia, styl pisania oraz tematy, które rozwija w swoich powieściach. Następnie streszczam pokrótce zarówno Kolekcjonera jak i Maga, przedstawiając główne tematy obu książek. Na końcu przedstawiam sylwetkę Jeana-Paula Sartre’a oraz jego poglądy dotyczące filozofii egzystencjalizmu.Pierwszy rozdział zatytułowany "'I just want to be with you. All the time': Love in The Collector" zajmuje się Sartriańskim podejściem do miłości rozwiniętym przez Fowlesa w formie wykreowania głównych bohaterów – Fredericka Clegga, szalonego porywacza, oraz Mirandy Grey, jego ofiary. W tej sekcji analizuję zachowanie obu postaci, ich stosunek zarówno do świata jak i do innych ludzi oraz ich zmanipulowane i zwyrodniałe podejście do miłości. Wykazuję, jak ich osobliwa więź i wyalienowanie od świata zewnętrznego nieuchronnie prowadzą do przedwczesnej i nieuzasadnionej śmierci Mirandy.Drugi rozdział zatytułowany "'It’s not the bomb. It’s us': Love in The Magus" jest analizą nieszablonowego związku pomiędzy Nicholasem Urfe a Alison Kelly. Pokazuję jak młodemu mężczyźnie nie udaje się stworzyć dojrzałego i pełnego miłości intymnego związku z Australijką, gdyż powstrzymuje go strach przed zaangażowaniem. Jest zbyt zapatrzony w siebie, żeby zrozumieć, ze Alison jest miłością jego życia, jedyną osobą, o której zawsze marzył. A kiedy w końcu to do niego dociera, jest już za późno, ponieważ Alison jest nie tylko znużona ciągłym czekaniem, lecz również zraniona do tego stopnia, ze nie chce już mieć z nim nic wspólnego.Zakończenie to wnioski, które wyciągnęłam z mojego badania.

The main aim of this thesis is searching for Jean-Paul Sartre’s influence on John Fowles’s writing. The paper concerns the concept of love as understood by Jean-Paul Sartre and investigates how it is reflected in John Fowles’s novels entitled The Collector and The Magus. In the introduction I present the figure of John Robert Fowles: his main achievements as a writer, his writing style and ideas which he developed in his works. Then I offer a short summary of The Collector and The Magus, presenting the main themes of both novels. Later on the figure of Jean-Paul Sartre is described along with his claims as an existential philosopher. The first chapter entitled "'I just want to be with you. All the time': Love in The Collector" concerns Sartrian attitude towards love developed by Fowles in the creation of the protagonists – Frederick Clegg, the mad kidnapper, and Miranda Grey, his victim. In this section I analyze both Clegg’s and Miranda’s behaviour, their approach to the world and other people, and their manipulated and perverted ideas concerning love. I depict how their uncanny bond and alienation from the outside world inevitably leads to Miranda’s premature and unnecessary death.The second chapter entitled "'It’s not the bomb. It’s us': Love in The Magus" analyses Nicholas Urfe and Alison Kelly’s bizarre relationship. I show how the young man fails in developing a mature and loving intimate relationship with an Australian girl due to his fear of commitment. He is too self-centred to realise that Alison is the love of his life and the one he has always longed for; and when he does eventually, it is too late because Alison is not only tired of waiting but also hurt to the point when she no longer wants him in her life. The ending offers the set of conclusions I have drawn from my inquiry.
