A Humanist in Crisis in John Maxwell Coetzee's Disgrace and Paul Auster's Book of Illusions

Praca porównuje dwie powieści: "Hańbę" autorstwa Johna Maxwella Coetzeego i "Księgę złudzeń" Paula Austera. Obie wpisują się w gatunek "powieści uniwersyteckiej", dlatego najważniejszym czynnikiem wspólnym, który stanowi podstawę porównania, jest kreacja głównych bohaterów-humanistów. Praca analizuje i interpretuje reakcje Davida Luriego i Davida Zimmera na poczucie wewnętrznego kryzysu wywołanego problemami natury prywatnej i zawodowej, który objawia się poprzez alienację i eskapizm. Omówiony jest w niej również proces pokonywania tego stanu dzięki autorefleksji i empatii w stosunku do innych.

This study compares two novels: "Disgrace" by John Maxwell Coetzee and "The Book of Illusions" by Paul Auster. Both belong to the genre of the 'academic novel', therefore the most important common factor that constitutes the basis of the comparison is the portrayal of the main characters-humanists. The study analyses and interprets David Lurie's and David Zimmer's reactions to a sense of inner crisis caused by private and professional problems, which manifests itself through alienation and escapism. It also discusses the process of overcoming this state through self-reflection and empathy with others.
