Analiza stylów wypowiedzi w angielskim przekładzie japońskiej powieści Konbini ningen (Convenience Store Woman)

Niniejsza praca stanowi analizę angielskiego przekładu japońskiej powieści Konbini ningen (Convenience Store Woman) autorstwa Sayaki Muraty w tłumaczeniu Ginny Tapley-Takemori. Analiza skupia się na stylach wypowiedzi w dialogach. Główna bohaterka świadomie naśladuje różne style wypowiedzi używając elementów obecnych w japońskim pozbawionych angielskiego odpowiednika. Celem pracy jest opis metod użytych przez tłumaczkę podczas przekładu różnych stylów wypowiedzi. Pierwszy rozdział stanowi nakreślenie ram teoretycznych pracy oraz opis metodologii użytych w pracy. Omówiona zostaje również ich użyteczność w kontekście przekładu z japońskiego na angielski. Ponieważ języki te są w znacznym stopniu niespokrewnione ze sobą, oraz z powodu różnic kulturowych, omówione zostają również koncepty egzotyzacji i udomowienia w przekładzie. Drugi rozdział zawiera streszczenie powieści, informacje o autorce i tłumaczce. Nakreślone zostaje również tło kulturowe niezbędne do zrozumienia tekstu. Trzeci rozdział stanowi analizę porównawczą tekstu źródłowego i przekładu. Wybrane fragmenty ilustrują różnice pomiędzy stylami wypowiedzi używanymi przez główną bohaterkę w celu zmiany wizerunku w zależności od sytuacji i rozmówców. Zostają omówione metody użyte aby oddać te różnice w przekładzie angielskim. Omówione zostaje jak wizerunek bohaterki zmienia się w zależności od wersji językowej.

This thesis is an analysis of the English translation of the Japanese novel Konbini ningen (Convenience Store Woman) by Sayaka Murata, translated by Ginny Tapley-Takemori. The focus of the analysis are speech styles in the dialogues. The protagonist consciously mimics different speech styles to change her image by using elements that are present in Japanese, but do not have an English equivalent. The purpose of this thesis is description of the translation methods used in order to convey differences in the speech styles. The first chapter is a description of theoretical framework and methodology used in the thesis. It is also discussed how these methods can be applied in the context of to the Japanese-English translation. Since Japanese and English are mostly unrelated languages, and because of the cultural differences, the concepts of foreignization and domestication in translation are also considered. The second chapter contains the summary of the novel, and information about the author and the translator. The cultural background necessary to understand the novel is also described. The third chapter is the comparative analysis of the source text and the target text. The chosen fragments of the dialogues are presented in the English and Japanese version. The fragments have been chosen to illustrate the differences between various speech styles used by the protagonist in order to change her image depending on situation and interlocutors. The methods used to convey these changes in the English text are identified. It is discussed how the protagonist’s image is different in the source and the target texts.
