Collective memory and commemoration. Difficult memory of the Holocaust-case study.

This work relates to issues of collective memory in the context of Polish memory of the Holocaust. The main subject is concentrated on phemonenas such as commemoration, conflict of memory and collective memory. These issues were examined on the basis of a case study which is the Myślenice community. Local organization "Community Myślenice" restored Myślenice memory of the Jews deported to the extermination camp in 1942 hanging a plaque on one of the houses of the main market in Myślenice. Before and during the project the Organisation has encountered reluctance (on the part of local authorities) to commemorate the Jewish community.The aim of the study is to analyze the social phenomenon which is to restore the memory of the Jews in Myślenice, and also attempt to explain the sources of animosity arising from the remembrance of this community. The research problem concerns the attitudes of residents towards the commemoration of Myślenice Jewish community.The research results indicate problems with the commemoration of the Jews in Myślenice. The examined attitudes of the city residents for the most part are reluctant towards the commemoration of this community and try to avoid this topic. Reluctant attitudes and problems that emerged before and during the project of laying a commemorative plaque result from negative image of Jews manifested in the treatment of minorities as alien.

Praca ta dotyczy zagadnienia pamięci zbiorowej w kontekście pamięci Polaków o Holokauście. Analizie zostały poddane takie zjawiska społeczne jak upamiętnianie, konflikt pamięci, a także sama pamięć zbiorowa. Zagadnienia te zostały przeanalizowane na podstawie studium przypadku, jakim jest społeczność miasta Myślenic. Lokalna organizacja „Wspólnota Myślenice” przywróciła pamięć o Żydach myślenickich, wywiezionych do obozu zagłady w 1942r., wmurowując tablicę pamiątkową na jednej z kamienic Rynku myślenickiego. Przed i w trakcie trwania projektu natrafiła na sprzeciw i niechęć ze strony władz lokalnych miasta wobec upamiętniania dawnej społeczności żydowskiej. Celem pracy jest przeanalizowanie zjawiska społecznego jakim jest przywrócenie pamięci o Żydach myślenickich, a także próbą wyjaśnienia źródeł animozji powstałych w wyniku upamiętniania tej społeczności. Problem badawczy dotyczy postaw mieszkańców Myślenic wobec upamiętniania dawnej społeczności żydowskiej.Wyniki badań wskazuję na to istniejące problemy związane z upamiętnianiem Żydów myślenickich. Badane postawy mieszkańców miasta w przeważającej części są postawami niechętnymi wobec upamiętniania tej społeczności i cechuje je chęć unikania tego tematu. Niechętne postawy oraz problemy, które pojawiły się przed i w trakcie realizacji projektu wmurowania tablicy pamiątkowej, wynikają z negatywnego obrazu Żydów przejawiającego się w traktowaniu tej mniejszości jako obcej, nie będącej w przeświadczeniu Myśleniczan częścią społeczności lokalnej.
