Examining the Protestant ethic through three American foundations’ charitable activities: The Cleveland Foundation, Lilly Endowment and The David and Lucile Packard Foundation

Praca przybliża historie fundacji analizowanych pod kątem realizowania zasad etyki protestanckiej. Nawiązując do biografii założycieli oraz śledząc dzieje instytucji poprzez analizę finansową uproszczonych tabel finansowych, oceniana jest obecność zasad etyki protestanckiej. Zwrócono szczególną uwagę na wydatki w postaci grantów, bowiem najlepiej ukazują one faktyczne wypełnianie misji fundacji. Cele dwóch z badanych organizacji - The Cleveland Foundation i Lilly Endowment – są do siebie podobne, The David and Lucile Packard Foundation wyróżnia się na ich tle z powodu wspierania kontrowersyjnych inicjatyw, które dzielą społeczeństwo. Sporządzone w formie wykresów statystyki wskazują, że najczęstsze cele działalności charytatywnej to: edukacja, wsparcie społeczności lokalnej i religia, ale także środowisko i zdrowie. Do napisania pracy i wyciągnięcia wniosków wykorzystano przeprowadzone przez firmy zewnętrze audyty finansowe fundacji.

The thesis takes a closer look at the histories of the aforementioned foundations in order to detect presence of the Protestant ethics. Referring to the biographies of the founders, tracing the history of the institutions, through financial analysis of simplified financial tables, the presence or absence of this characteristic is assessed. Close attention was paid to expenditures in the form of grants, as they best demonstrate the factual fulfillment of the foundations' missions. The goals of two of the surveyed organizations - The Cleveland Foundation and the Lilly Endowment - are similar, The David and Lucile Packard Foundation stands out from them because of its support for controversial initiatives that divide society. Compiled in the form of charts, the statistics show that the most common charitable goals are education, community support and religion, but also the environment and health. External companies' financial audits of foundations were used to write the paper and draw conclusions.
