Adaptation to the illness-the description of a case of a patient with type 1 diabetes.

Cukrzyca typu 1 jest przewlekłą, nieuleczalną chorobą. Dotyczy głównie dzieci i osób młodych, a przyczyną jest uszkodzenie komórek beta trzustki, produkujących insulinę. Nieprawidłowo leczona cukrzyca, zwiększa ryzyko rozwoju poważnych dla życia powikłań. Cukrzyca narzuca reżim życia codziennego, wymagający od pacjenta i jego rodziny, pełnego zaangażowania w proces leczenia.Celem pracy było przedstawienie przypadku osoby z długoletnią cukrzycą insulinozależną, która osiągnęła stan adaptacji do choroby. Pacjentka od dziecka była przygotowywana do samoopieki, co pozwoliło jej osiągnąć stan adaptacji do choroby dzięki: gruntownej edukacji własnej i jej rodziny, wsparciu ze strony najbliższych, akceptacji choroby przez pacjentkę i osoby dla niej znaczące, samodyscyplinie pacjentki w leczeniu cukrzycy.

Diabetes of type 1 is a chronic, incurable disease. It affects mainly children and young people, and it is caused by a damage to the pancreatic beta cells that produce insulin. Poorly treated diabetes increases the risk of developing serious complications. Diabetes imposes a regime of daily life, requiring the patient and his/her family, to engage fully in the process of treatment.The aim of the study was to present the case of a person with long-term insulin-dependent diabetes, who has reached the state of adaptation to the disease. The patient was prepared for self-care since childhood what enabled her to achieve a state of adaptation to diabetes by: a thorough education of herself and her family, the support of loved ones, acceptance of the disease by the patient and significant others, self-discipline in the treatment.
