The map of settlement in early Middle Ages in Cracow

Mapa osadnictwa we wczesnym średniowieczu na terenie Krakowa, jest ważnym aspektem studiów nad rozwojem miasta. Temat ten był już niejednokrotnie poruszany, jednakże powstałe publikacje odnosiły się głównie do centrum Krakowa, jak również przeprowadzono wiele badań od czasu ich napisania. Dlatego praca ta jest zebraniem obecnej wiedzy i publikacji powstałych na ten temat. Rozwój osadnictwa został opisany w trzech różnych okresach: wczesnosłowiańskim, „plemiennym” oraz wczesnopaństwowym. Wraz z zmianami zachodzącymi w kulturze, charakteryzującymi dany okres, zagęszczała się sieć osadnicza. Na terenie Krakowa, w jego obecnych granicach, znajdowało się 158 stanowisk wczesnośredniowiecznych. Wśród stanowisk wyróżnić należy gród dwuczłonowy, otoczony walami, który składał się z Wawelu i Okołu. Nieliczne stanowiska były cmentarzyskami. Natomiast największą ilość stanowisk stanowiły osady otwarte. Wynikiem pracy jest odtworzenie, na podstawie obecnych opublikowanych badań, mapy osadniczej i jej charakteru na terenie Krakowa.

The map of settlement in early Middle Ages in Cracow is very important aspect of studies about the medieval Cracow. Although many books have been written about that issue, most of them focused on the centre of the city. Moreover, a lot of research has been done since the books were published. This Master Thesis is concerned with settlement of early medieval Cracow based on recent research and publications. In my thesis the development of the settlement has been described and presented in three periods: earlyslavic, tribal and earlynational. In early medieval settlement became more dense. In early Middle Ages there were 158 archeological sites located in the border of modern Cracow, from which the dyadicborough should be distinguished (consist of Wawel and Okół). Moreover, several sites were cemeteries but the most of them were villages. The result of my thesis is reproduction of settlement map in the borders of modern Cracow, based on available, published research.
