Supernatural phenomena in selected works of Russian romantic literature

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest analizie zjawisk nadprzyrodzonych w rosyjskiej literaturze romantycznej. W pracy poruszony został problem teoretycznych zagadnień związanych z fantastyką oraz zjawiskami nadprzyrodzonymi w literaturze. Podjęto w nim próbę zdefiniowania zjawiska romantyzmu, jego korzeni oraz wpływów literatury zachodniej na literaturę rosyjską. Rozwinięte również zostało zagadnienie tła historycznego i społecznego, które towarzyszyło twórcom analizowanych utworów. Ważnym elementem tego rozdziału jest próba zdefiniowania samego zjawiska fantastyki. Praca zawiera analizę ballad "Ludmiła" oraz "Swietłana" Wasilija Żukowskiego. Poruszony zostaje w nim problem niemieckich wpływów na rosyjski romantyzm, w tym przypadku Gottfrieda Augusta Burgera oraz recepcji motywów z zachodniej literatury grozy. Kolejnym ważnym tematem obecnym przy analizie powyższych utworów jest rola folkloru rosyjskiego oraz rozwój sposobu jego wykorzystania na podstawie porównania obu ballad. Utworem analizowanym w następnym podrozdziale jest "Dama pikowa" Aleksandra Puszkina. Powyższe opowiadanie jest przykładem niebezpośredniego pokazania zjawisk nadprzyrodzonych. Poruszona tutaj zostaje również kwestia historii gier karcianych w Imperium Rosyjskim, które były ważnym elementem życia towarzyskiego. Motyw gier karcianych łączy się bezpośrednio z problemem uzależnienia od hazardu, które dotyka głównego bohatera. Zjawiska nadprzyrodzone ukazane w opowiadaniu wiążą się z przedstawionym nałogiem. Ostatnim omawianym w pracy utworem jest "Wij" Nikołaja Gogola. W tym podrozdziale zostają przedstawione różne oblicza zjawisk nadprzyrodzonych – od tych pogodnych w "Wieczorach na chutorze nieopodal Dikańki" aż po mroczne i niepokojące ze zbioru "Mirgorod". Na podstawie "Wija" pokazane zostaje wykorzystanie demonologii ludowej oraz elementów ukraińskiego folkloru. Trzeci rozdział pracy ma charakter podsumowujący. Przedstawione są w nim wnioski z pracy i obserwacje. Opisane zostają cechy wspólne oraz różnice między analizowanymi utworami oraz związki z zagadnieniami teoretycznymi przedstawionymi w pierwszym rozdziale pracy. Zaprezentowane zostaną również dalsze losy motywu sił nadnaturalnych w późniejszej literaturze rosyjskiej.

This work is devoted to the analysis of supernatural phenomena in Russian romantic literature. The paper deals with the problem of theoretical issues related to fantasy and supernatural phenomena in literature. It attempts to define the phenomenon of romanticism, its roots and the influence of Western literature on Russian literature. The issue of historical and social background, which accompanied the authors of the analyzed works, was also developed. An important element of this chapter is the attempt to define the phenomenon of fantasy itself. The work contains an analysis of the ballads "Lyudmila" and "Svetlana" by Vasily Zhukovsky. It deals with the problem of German influences on Russian romanticism, in this case Gottfried August burger and the reception of motifs from western horror literature. Another important theme present in the analysis of the above works is the role of Russian folklore and the development of its use on the basis of a comparison of the two ballads. The work analyzed in the next subsection is "The Queen of Spades" by Alexander Pushkin. The above story is an example of an indirect demonstration of supernatural phenomena. The history of card games in the Russian empire, which were an important element of social life, is also touched upon here. The theme of card games is directly linked to the problem of gambling addiction, which affects the main character. Supernatural phenomena depicted in the story are associated with the presented addiction. The last piece discussed in the work is "Viy" by Nikolai Gogol. In this subsection are presented different faces of supernatural phenomena – from those serene in "Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka", to the dark and disturbing from the collection "Mirgorod". On the basis of "Viy" is shown the use of folk demonology and elements of Ukrainian folklore. The third chapter of the thesis is of a summarizing nature. It presents the conclusions of the work and observations. Common features and differences between the analyzed works are described, as well as relationships with the theoretical issues presented in the first chapter of the work. The further fate of the motive of supernatural forces in later Russian literature will also be presented.
