Perhaps the knowledge and skills of the interwar collective of Łódź-based humanists, partially verbalized and partially existing as "silent knowledge," functioned as important elements of Stefania Skwarczyńska’s thinking style, which she expressed within the conceptual scholarly confines of literary and cultural theory. But that which eventually became a part of the project of high literary theory and merged (without indicating a heterogeneous initial situation) into the framework of the post-war "Łódź experiment," that is, the programme of cultural studies, was in its beginnings a practical and experimental knowledge, developed locally within the community of social activists and Polish teachers, whose aspirations contributed to the emergence of a new type of scholarly culture. The case of Stefania Skwarczyńska is separate: not only did she succeed in making a significant contribution to the development of the humanities after 1945, but she also established a unique institutional environment for her own research project. Both the Department of Literary Theory and another periodical that she started - Zagadnienia Rodzajów Literackich - were intended to extend this project (which they successfully did) beyond the boundaries of her creative existence. Just like cultural studies, they have become a materialized part of the city’s noetic space.
