Trend of intellectual cinema in Iran – analysis and interpretation of "The Brick and The Mirror” by Ebrahim Golestan one of the forerunners of Iranian New Wave

Głównym celem mojej pracy jest analiza i interpretacja filmu Ebrahima Golestana pt. "Cegła i lustro", który jest uważany za jednego z prekursorów Irańskiej Nowej Fali. W pracy przedstawiam historię kina irańskiego, mając na względzie wydarzenia historyczne, które w pośredni lub bezpośredni sposób wpłynęły na twórców filmowych. Prześledzenie historii kinematografii pozwala zrozumieć dlaczego doszło do tak dużej zmiany w twórczości filmowej w latach 60 i w efekcie powstania ruchu nowofalowego. Na końcu staram się przeanalizować i zinterpretować film "Cegła i Lustro" Ebrahima Golestana, żeby pokazać dlaczego stał się on inspiracją dla późniejszych twórców i jest uważany za jeden z najważniejszych filmów kina intelektualnego w Iranie.

Main purpose of my thesis is analysis and interpretation of „The Brick and The Mirror” by Ebrahim Golestan, which is considered one of the forerunners of Iranian New Wave. In my work I present the history of Iranian cinema and I take into consideration historical events that had impact on filmmakers in direct or indirect way. Following the history of cinematography allows to understand why there was such a big change in filmmaking in the 60s and consequently coming into being the new wave movement. Finally I try to analyze and interpret film called “The Brick and The Mirror” to show why it became an inspiration for following filmmakers and why it is considered to be one of the most important film of intellectual cinema in Iran.
