"Wacht am Rhein" - Ardennes Offensive 1944/1945

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest zagadnieniu niemieckiej ofensywy w Ardenach zimą 1944/1945 roku. Operacja "Wacht am Rhein" była ostatnią desperacką próbą odwrócenia przez Niemców losów II wojny światowej na froncie zachodnim. Ofensywa miała bardzo nikłe szanse powodzenia, jednak alianci zostali kompletnie zaskoczeni, co wpłynęło na tempo poradzenia sobie z niemieckim atakiem. W pracy podjęto próbę osadzenia ofensywy w szerszym kontekście niemieckiej sytuacji wynikłej z wydarzeń ostatnich dwóch lat na frontach europejskich. Autor stara się spojrzeć na niemiecką ofensywę, aliancką kontrofensywę i niemieckie operacje wspierające jako elementy większej układanki. Pierwszy rozdział poświęcony jest rozwojowi wydarzeń na trzech frontach europejskich w latach 1943-1944. Kolejny rozdział zajmuje się etapem przygotowania ofensywy przez Niemców i jej przebiegiem w fazie niemieckich sukcesów, aż do symbolicznego przerwania przez Amerykanów okrążenia Bastogne 26 grudnia. Ostatni rozdział bierze pod lupę okres przed rozpoczęciem alianckiej kontrofensywy, niemieckie operacje mające wspomóc sytuację walczących w Ardenach i późniejsze wyrównywanie przez aliantów linii frontu do tej sprzed niemieckiego uderzenia.

This thesis is devoted to the subject of the German offensive in the Ardennes in the winter of 1944/1945. Operation "Wacht am Rhein" was the last desperate attempt by Germany to reverse the course of the Second World War on the Western Front. Although the chances of success were very limited, the Allies were taken completely by surprise, which affected the pace at which they were able to counter the German attack. The study seeks to place the offensive within the broader context of Germany’s situation resulting from the events of the preceding two years on the European fronts. The author aims to view the German offensive, the Allied counteroffensive, and the supporting German operations as interconnected elements of a larger whole. The first chapter focuses on the course of events on the three European fronts in the years 1943–1944. The following chapter examines the preparations for the offensive undertaken by Germany and its initial successes, up until the symbolic breaking of the siege of Bastogne by American forces on December 26. The final chapter analyzes the period preceding the Allied counteroffensive, the German operations intended to improve the situation of their forces in the Ardennes, and the subsequent re-establishment of the front line by the Allies to its position prior to the German assault.
