Asian motifs in the animated series „Avatar: The Last Airbender”

Celem niniejszej pracy jest wykazanie wszelkich motywów azjatyckich, przejawiających się w amerykańskim serialu animowanym pod tytułem „Awatar: Legenda Aanga”. W tym celu poddane analizie zostały wszystkie trzy sezony wyżej wymienionej serii. Omówione zostały zagadnienia dotyczące bezpośrednio mieszkańców poszczególnych narodów świata Awatara, poruszając takie kwestie jak ich wygląd zewnętrzny, broń i techniki, które wykorzystują w walce, a także tradycje przejawiające się w ich kulturze. W pracy odniesiono się również do zagadnień związanych z budową świata przedstawionego, takich jak architektura, środowisko naturalne, muzyka oraz pismo. Dyskurs ten obejmuje nawiązania względem krajów azjatyckich nie tylko w kontekście ich kultury i obyczajów, ale również w kwestiach takich jak ich historia bądź popkultura.

The purpose of the following thesis is to demonstrate Asian motifs manifested in the American animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. In order to achieve that, all three seasons of the series mentioned above were analyzed. Issues related directly to the inhabitants of each nation of the Avatar world were discussed, including their outward appearance, weapons and techniques, used by them in combat, as well as traditions manifested in their culture. In the thesis issues related to the construction of the represented world were referred as well, such as architecture, natural environment, music and writing. This discourse includes references to the Asian countries not only in the context of their culture and customs, but also in issues such as their history or pop culture.
