A forgotten custom or a recurring phenomenon? - heraldic practices in Japan in the 21st century

Praca porusza tematykę praktyk heraldycznych w Japonii XXI wieku, badanych w kontekście rozróżnienia pomiędzy zapomnianym zwyczajem a powracającym fenomenem. Na podstawie analizy zagadnień historycznych dotyczących zarówno heraldyki japońskiej, jak i europejskiej, a także metod tradycyjnego i współczesnego tworzenia oraz występowania monów (herbów japońskich), praca ukazuje podobieństwa i różnice w praktykach heraldycznych przed rokiem 1868 i po nim. Celem pracy jest zbadanie zmian zachodzących w popularności heraldyki japońskiej na przestrzeni lat, a także określenie jej umiejscowienia w kulturze na początku XXI wieku. Poruszając niszowe zagadnienie heraldyki japońskiej, praca stanowi poszerzenie wąskiej literatury przedmiotu, zwracając uwagę na obszerność i wielowymiarowość omawianego zagadnienia, nie tylko w wymiarze historycznym, ale także współczesnym. W wyniku przeprowadzonych badań wyciągnięto wnioski, na podstawie których heraldykę japońską określono jako dziedzinę przystosowywującą się do zmian zachodzących w społeczeństwie.

The dissertation deals with the subject of heraldic practices in 21st century Japan, studied in the context of the distinction between a forgotten custom and a recurring phenomenon. Based on an analysis of historical issues concerning both Japanese and European heraldry, as well as traditional and modern methods of creating and occurring monas (Japanese coats of arms), thesis shows the similarities and differences in heraldic practices before and after 1868. The aim of the study is to investigate the changes taking place in the popularity of Japanese heraldry over the years, as well as to determine its location in culture at the beginning of the 21st century. By addressing the niche issue of Japanese heraldry, the work is an extension of the narrow literature on the subject, paying attention to the breadth and multidimensionality of the issue under discussion, not only in the historical but also in the contemporary dimension. As a result of the research, conclusions were drawn on the basis of which Japanese heraldry was defined as a field that adapts to changes taking place in society.
