Nowoczesny czy tradycyjny: Kraków we współczesnej powieści anglojęzycznej

Niniejsza praca dotyczy wizerunku Krakowa w powieściach anglojęzycznych wydanych w ostatnich pięciu latach (2007-2011). Do literatury podmiotu należą przede wszystkim A Long, Long Time Ago & Essentially True Brigid Pasulki, Winter Under Water Jamesa Hopkina i Kraków Melt Daniela Allena Coxa. Akcja wszystkich wyżej wymienionych powieści rozgrywa się we współczesnym Krakowie, a ważne dla Polski wydarzenia historyczne stanowią jej ważny element. Praca skoncentrowana jest wokół dwóch tematów wspólnych dla wyżej wymienionych powieści, którymi są: przemiana Krakowa po 1989r. i relacje stałych mieszkańców miasta, z tymi, którzy dopiero niedawno do Krakowa przybyli. Omówione zostały też wizerunki poszczególnych miejsc Krakowa, takich jak Rynek czy Nowa Huta. Dodatkowo, żeby przedstawić pełniejszy obraz miasta w literaturze, praca obejmuje też recenzje czterech innych powieści, w których Kraków odgrywa ważną rolę. Analiza literatury podmiotu potwierdza, że Kraków inspiruje pisarzy, którzy często bazują opisy miasta na swoich doświadczeniach z nim związanych. Wnioski z niniejszej pracy mogą być wykorzystane przy promocji miasta. Mogą też stanowić punkt wyjścia do dalszych badań nad Krakowem w literaturze.

The thesis aims at presenting the image of Kraków in English-language novels published in the recent five years (since 2007). The main focus are A Long, Long Time Ago & Essentially True by Brigid Pasulka, Winter Under Water by James Hopkin and Kraków Melt by Daniel Allen Cox, which are set in contemporary Kraków and have important events from the recent Polish history as their backgrounds. Two topics recurrent in the three novels, namely the change which Kraków has undergone since 1989 and the relations between the permanent inhabitants of the city and the newcomers, serve as the basis for discussion. Moreover, the literary images of particular places in the city, such as the Rynek or Nowa Huta, are presented. Additionally, the work includes short reviews of four other recently published novels set partially in Kraków, which belong to popular fiction. The study proves that Kraków is an inspiring city for writers, who create a literary image of the place based on their own experiences in the city. This thesis, which is a valuable addition to the study of literary images of cities, could serve as the basis for further study on the image of Kraków in literature. The results could also be used in city advertising.
