EU: From Paradox to Progress. An inquiry into the viability of a European Constitutional Patriotism

master
In this thesis the viability of Habermas' theory of constitutional patriotism is being tested in the transnational area of the European Union. By sketching the current political and identity crisis that the EU finds itself in, the need for addressing this problem becomes evident. The context of this problematization is the growing populism and divided middle class that is paralyzing the European project. Both cosmopolitans and nationalists have to be accommodated as soon as possible in order to save the EU. One way to bridge the gap between the losers and the winners of globalization is the theory of constitutional patriotism. It holds that the norms, values, and procedures of the democratic process are to become the core of ones political identity - pre-political identifications like ethnicity and nationality are to be completely separated from the political sphere. By analyzing the critiques against constitutional patriotism, and exploring how the concept would translate towards the transnational level, it is concluded that constitutional patriotism with the addition of democratic experimentalism and cosmopolitan consciousness can truly unite in diversity - it can move the EU from its current paralyzing paradox to a progressive future.pl
