Biblical motifs in the German-Jewish literature on the example of The Power of the Weak by Anna Seghers

Streszczenie pracy magisterskiej pt.: „Motywy biblijne w literaturze niemiecko-żydowskiej na przykładzie Siły słabych Anny Seghers“. Przedmiotem tej pracy są motywy biblijne w literaturze niemiecko-żydowskiej dwudziestego wieku. Głównym celem jest zbadanie odniesień do Biblii w opowiadaniach Anny Seghers ze zbioru pt. Siła Słabych. Praca jest próbą potwierdzenia hipotezy, iż motywy biblijne w twórczości Anny Seghers są wyrazem jej żydowskiej tożsamości, która jednakże nie jest związana z narodem. Wymaga to zbadania biografii, dzienników i wypowiedzi autorki na temat Biblii, gdyż nada to głębszy, całościowy wgląd w jej twórczość.Najpierw zostają objaśnione pojęcia literatura niemiecko-żydowska oraz Biblia. Gówna część pracy podzielona jest na dwa rozdziały, w pierwszym omówione zostają te elementy bibliografii autorki, które są powiązane z jej tożsamością i rzucają światło na jej poglądy powiązane z wyborem motywów biblijnych. Drugi rozdział jest częścią badawczą i skupia się na analizie opowiadań z tomu pt. Siła słabych pod kątem występowania motywów biblijnych. Punktem wyjścia jest założenie, iż tytuł odnoszący się bezpośrednio do cytatu biblijnego należy odnieść również do poszczególnych opowiadań jako do całości. Poszczególne motywy oparte są na więcej niż pojedynczym cytacie biblijnym z takim samym przesłaniem. Największym wyzwaniem jest znikoma ilość i dostępność w Polsce literatury naukowej, która traktuje o motywach biblijnych w twórczości Anny Seghers, co może utrudniać poparcie niektórych tez. Ta próba interpretacji wskazuje jednakże na różnorodność motywów odnoszących się zarówno do Starego jaki do Nowego Testamentu występujących w twórczości autorki. Jako, że wychowała się ona w religii żydowskiej, a później „sympatyzowała” z ideologią chrześcijańską istnieje wielowymiarowa możliwość interpretacji jej opowiadań.

Summary of the master dissertation entitled: „Biblical motifs in the German-Jewish literature on the example of The Power of the Weak by Anna Seghers“. This master dissertation explores biblical motifs in the 20th century German-Jewish literature. The aim is to analyze allusions to the Bible in the volume of stories entitled The Power oft he Weak by Anna Seghers. It is an attempt to confirm the thesis that biblical motifs in the work of Anna Seghers are a manifestation of her Jewish identity but have less connection to the Jewish people. This study requires a research oft the author’s biography, her journals, as well as her statements regarding the Bible as it enables a more complex insight into her work.The first step is to explain the terms German-Jewish literature and the Bible. The main part of this paper is divided into two chapters. The first chapter explores those fields of the author‘s biography, which are connected with her identity and might shed a new light on her views and the choice of biblical motifs. The second chapter analyses the particular stories from the volume The Power of the Weak with regard to the use of biblical motifs. The starting point is the title oft the volume of stories in connection with the single stories which are being considered as a whole and which are based on a joint biblical idea. The particular motifs are being compared with more than just one Bible verse with the same message. The main issue is that there is very little relevant literature regarding biblical motifs in the work of Anna Seghers and the majority is not available in Poland which makes it difficult to support the explanation of some motifs. This attempt to interpret the volume of stories shows a variety of motifs from the Old Testament as well as from the New Testament. There are multidimensional possibilities of interpretation of the author‘s work as she was raised in the Jewish tradition but later sympathized with the Christian ideology.

Zusammenfassung der Magisterarbeit zum Thema: „Biblische Motive in der deutsch-jüdischen Literatur anhand Die Kraft der Schwachen von Anna Seghers“.In dieser Arbeit wird nach biblischen Motiven in der deutsch-jüdischen Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts geforscht. Das Ziel ist Anspielungen an die Bibel in den Erzählungen aus dem Band Die Kraft der Schwachen von Anna Seghers zu untersuchen. Es ist ein Versuch die These zu bestätigen, dass biblische Motive im Schaffen von Seghers Ausdruck ihrer jüdischen Identität sind aber nicht einer an die Nation gebundener. Die Studie erfordert sowohl einer Untersuchung der Biographie, der Tagebücher, als auch der Äußerungen der Autorin zum Thema Bibel, da es einen komplexeren Einblick in ihr Werk als Ganzes bietet. Zuerst werden die Begriffe deutsch-jüdische Literatur und die Bibel erläutert. Das Korpus dieser Arbeit wird in zwei Kapitel unterteilt, im ersten wird auf diejenigen Bereiche der Biographie der Autorin eingegangen, die mit ihrer Identität verbunden sind und ein Licht auf ihre Anschauungen und die Auswahl biblischer Motive werfen. Im zweiten Teil werden die einzelnen Erzählungen aus dem Erzählband Die Kraft der Schwachen im Hinblick auf biblische Motive untersucht. Der Ausgangspunkt ist der Titel des Erzählbandes im Zusammenhang mit den Erzählungen, die als ein Ganzes betrachtet werden und auf einer gemeinsamen biblischen Idee beruhen. Die bestimmten Motive werden anhand von mehreren Bibeltexten mit derselben Aussage verglichen. Das größte Problem in diesem Fall besteht darin, dass es wenig Fachliteratur zu biblischen Motiven im Schaffen von Seghers gibt und die Mehrheit davon in Polen kaum zu finden ist und somit die Erläuterung mancher Motive nicht ausreichend unterstützt werden können. Dieser Versuch einer Interpretation deutet auf die Vielfalt der Motive, die in Erzählungen von Seghers auftauchen, sowohl aus dem Alten, als auch aus dem Neuen Testament. Da sie der jüdischen Religion entstammt und später mit der christlichen Ideologie sympathisiert, entsteht eine mehrdimensionale Deutungsmöglichkeit ihrer Erzählungen.
