Terror i horror: dwie tradycje gotyckie w „Żółtej Tapecie” autorstwa Charlotte Perkins Gilman i w „1408” Stephena Kinga

Niniejsza praca koncentruje się na dwóch tradycjach w powieściach gotyckich. Te dwietradycje, terror i horror, były obecne od samych początków powieści gotyckiej i sązwiązane z dziełami Ann Radcliffe i Matthew Gregory Lewisa. Terror i horror zostanąprzeanalizowane i omówione pod kątem związku z bardziej współczesnymi dziełami,mianowicie "Żółta Tapeta" autorstwa Charlotte Perkins Gilman oraz "1408"Stephena Kinga. Opowiadanie Gilman wykorzystuje suspens i stopniowe budowanienapięcia poprzez tworzenie tajemniczej atmosfery. Jest ono także bardzo spokojne ipozbawione dynamicznej akcji. Z drugiej strony, King koncentruje się naprezentowaniu brutalnych opisów i potworów w celu zszokowania i przestraszeniaczytelników. „1408” jest bardzo dynamicznym opowiadaniem, w którym cały czas cośsię dzieje. Jednak ostatecznie oba opowiadania biorą najlepsze elementy z dwóchtradycji i przedstawiają je w swój unikatowy sposób.

The main focus of this paper are two traditions of Gothic fiction. Those traditions, terrorand horror, were present since the beginning of Gothic fiction and are connected withthe works of Ann Radcliffe and Matthew Gregory Lewis. Terror and horror are analysedand discussed in relation to more contemporary works, namely, Charlotte PerkinsGilman's “The Yellow Wallpaper” and Stephen King's “1408”. Gilman's work uses suspenseand carefully builds up tension by creating mysterious atmosphere. It is also a calmstory without any quick or violent action. On the other hand, King focuses onpresenting violent descriptions and monsters in order to shock and scare thereaders.”1408” is a very dynamic story, something is happening all the time. In the end,the two stories take the best elements of the two traditions and present them in theirown unique way.
