Cultural differences as barriers to effective communication

Różnice kulturowe stanowią istotną barierę w procesie komunikacji, utrudniając porozumienie i współpracę zarówno na poziomie ludzkim, jak też instytucjonalnym. Ponieważ są to różnice w wartościach, normach, przekonaniach, zachowaniach społecznych, które nie zawsze są widoczne „gołym okiem” i uświadamiane, przez to są szczególnie niebezpiecznie, prowadzą do nieporozumień, a nawet konfliktów. W oparciu o prace takich badaczy jak Geert Hofstede, Edward Hall, Richard Gesteland, Richard Lewis, Fons Trompenaars, Charles Numpden-Turner i Erine Meyer przedstawiono pięć modeli opisu różnic kulturowych. Bardziej szczegółowo przeanalizowano model wymiarów kultury Geerta Hofstede oraz dokonano zestawienia wskaźników sześciu parametrów (dystans do władzy, indywidualizm, męskość, unikanie niepewności, długoterminowa orientacja, przyzwolenie) dla Polski i Ukrainy.

Cultural differences are a significant barrier to the communication process, hindering understanding and cooperation at both human and institutional levels. As these are differences in values, norms, beliefs, social behaviour that are not always visible to the “naked eye” or clear, they are particularly dangerous and lead to misunderstandings and even conflicts. Based on the work of researchers such as Geert Hofstede, Edward Hall, Richard Gesteland, Richard Lewis, Fons Trompenaars, Charles Numpden-Turner and Erine Meyer, five models for describing cultural differences are presented. Geert Hofstede's cultural dimensions model is analysed in more detail, and indexes of six parameters (power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, long-term orientation, acquiescence) are compared for Poland and Ukraine.
