The Role of Belarusian Minority Media in the Podlasie Region in Shaping National Identity

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza roli tradycyjnych mediów białoruskiej mniejszości narodowej funkcjonujących na Podlasiu w procesie kształtowania i podtrzymywania jej tożsamości narodowej.W części teoretycznej przedstawiono podstawy dotyczące mniejszości narodowych w Polsce – regulacje prawne, ogólną charakterystykę mniejszości, historię społeczności białoruskiej oraz specyfikę regionu Podlasia. Omówiono także definicje i mechanizmy kształtowania się tożsamości narodowej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem tożsamości białoruskiej. Kolejna część została poświęcona roli mediów w tym procesie – opisano prasę, radio, telewizję, a także dokonano krótkiej charakterystyki nowych mediów oraz obecny stan badań w tym obszarze.W części empirycznej pracy zaprezentowano badania własne przeprowadzone metodą ilościową (ankieta internetowa) wśród osób zamieszkujących województwo podlaskie i identyfikujące się z mniejszością białoruską. Na podstawie wyników stwierdzono, że wielu respondentów postrzega media jako ważne narzędzie wspierające utrzymanie tożsamości i więzi z kulturą białoruską. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono także na pojęcie „tutejsi” – odnoszącego się do formy identyfikacji charakterystycznej dla tej grupy mniejszościowej.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the role of traditional media of the Belarusian national minority operating in the Podlasie region in the process of shaping and preserving its national identity.The theoretical part presents the foundations related to national minorities in Poland, including legal regulations, a general overview of minority groups, the history of the Belarusian community, and the socio-cultural specificity of the Podlasie region. It also discusses the definitions and mechanisms involved in the formation of national identity, with particular emphasis on Belarusian identity. A subsequent section is devoted to the role of the media in this process, covering the press, radio, and television, as well as offering a brief characterization of new media and the current state of research in this field.The empirical part of the thesis presents original research conducted using a quantitative method (an online questionnaire) among residents of the Podlaskie region who identify with the Belarusian minority. The findings indicate that many respondents perceive media as an important tool for maintaining their identity and connection to Belarusian culture. Particular attention is given to the concept of "tutejsi" – a form of local identification characteristic of this minority group.
