Niniejsza książka swoim tytułem nawiązuje do "Teorii listu" - pracy habilitacyjnej Stefanii Skwarczyńskiej wydanej w 1937 roku we Lwowie, a będącej do dziś czytelnym punktem odniesienia dla wszystkich badaczy epistolografii w Polsce. Monografia Skwarczyńskiej, stanowiąca w rzeczywistości wielki projekt badawczy, prekursorski zarówno w wymiarze teoretycznym (interdyscyplinarność spojrzenia, kategoria "literatury stosowanej", definicja i typologia listu), jak i historycznoliterackim oraz interpretacyjnym (komparatystyczność ujęcia, pierwszy zarys dziejów listu, liczne przykłady listów z różnych epok), nie doczekała się w ciągu kolejnych lat uaktualnienia, mimo iż jako jedyna praca - spośród generalnie nielicznych polskich książek poświęconych epistolografii - jest czytana przez specjalistów różnych dziedzin zajmujących się listami . Lukę tę ma zapełnić niniejsza monografia, która jest zarazem kontynuacją projektu Skwarczyńskiej, jak też jego uzupełnieniem o nowe konteksty teoretyczne i badawcze, nieobecne w przedwojennej refleksji. "Nowa teoria listu" podzielona została na dwie części, które poprzedza obszerne wprowadzenie, mające na celu przedstawienie polskich badań epistolograficznych na tle prac zagranicznych: ich problematyki, zakresu oraz obecnych w nich pól badawczych. Szczególne miejsce zajmują pośród nich propozycje teoretycznoliterackie, od Teorii listu począwszy, a na najnowszych koncepcjach - Elżbiety Rybickiej czy Lucyny Marzec - skończywszy. Chociaż mają one szkicowy charakter i formę krótkich rozpraw, stanowią ważny punkt odniesienia dla całokształtu proponowanej nowej teorii listu, która ma charakter modułowy. Pomysł zastąpienia całościowego, jednolitego narzędzia - konfiguracją użytecznych dla danego bloku epistolograficznego koncepcji i metod wynika z przekonania, że list jako wypowiedź złożona i wielowymiarowa nie daje się sprowadzić do postaci, którą dałoby się ująć w ściśle określone ramy, jednakowe dla wszystkich listów niezależnie od ich typu czy czasu powstania. Od decyzji badacza, który bierze pod uwagę liczne uwarunkowania i kontekst konkretnego tekstu epistolarnego, zależy wybór danego aspektu korespondencji uznanego za najbardziej interesujący; w ramach niniejszej monografii będzie on się mógł zapoznać z wieloma możliwymi ujęciami danej problematyki użytecznymi w analizie listów, a sięgającymi do narzędzi literaturoznawczych oraz językoznawczych, a także koncepcji i metod wypracowanych w ramach filozofii (antropologia personalistyczna, filozofia umysłu, techniki Siebie) oraz nauk społecznych (psychologia komunikacji, logoterapia, analiza konwersacyjna, analiza dyskursu). Zaproponowana w niniejszej monografii teoria listu została przedstawiona szczegółowo w części pierwszej, podzielonej na sześć rozdziałów. Otwiera ją przegląd dotychczas stosowanych ujęć i charakterystyk listu, który prowadzi do sformułowania nowej definicji, stanowiąc podstawę kolejnych pięciu istotnych dla listu perspektyw. W dalszych rozdziałach pojawiają się takie zagadnienia jak dialogowość, podmiotowość, autokreacja, autoprezentacja, świadomość i nieświadomość, reprezentacja, pragmetyczność i performatywność listu, samozwrotność, techniki Siebie oraz potrzeba i wola sensu. Konteksty te, dotąd często niewykorzystywane w analizie epistolografii, są praktyczną realizacją postulatu Skwarczyńskiej, by analizować list interdyscyplinarnie i skonstruować dla tego gatunku odrębne metody badawcze. Druga część monografii przynosi z kolei sześć autonomicznych studiów interpretacyjnych, wykorzystujących wcześniej zaproponowane teorie i metody badawcze w analizie listów takich twórców jak Adam Mickiewcz, Juliusz Słowacki, Zygmunt Krasiński, Maria Konopnicka, Zbigniew Herbert czy Sławomir Mrożek. Całościowe, teoretyczno-interpretacyjne spojrzenie na list jako jeden z najstarszych gatunków literackich, niezmiennie towarzyszący człowiekowi piśmiennemu, dokumentujący jego zmagania się z rzeczywistością i stanowiący kulturowe "lustro", w którym podmiot pozostawia na zawsze utrwalone swe własne odbicie jest rodzajem "nowego otwarcia" w badaniach epistolograficznych, a równocześnie zaproszeniem do żywej, naukowej debaty na temat miejsca, funkcji i znaczenia listu zarówno w naukach humanistycznych, jak i społecznych.

The title of this book alludes to the "Theory of the letter" - the postdoctoral thesis of Stefania Skwarczyńska published in 1937 in Lviv, which remains a clear reference point for all researchers in Polish epistolography. Skwarczyńska’s monograph, which is actually a huge research project, innovative both in the theoretical dimension (interdisciplinary perception, category of applied literature, definition and typology of the letter), as well in the dimension of literary history and interpretation (comparative approach, the first outline of the history of the letter, numerous examples of letters from various epochs), has not been updated in the years to come, although as the only work - among the generally few Polish books devoted to epistolography - it is still read by specialists in various fields dealing with letters. This gap is meant to be filled in by this monograph, which is also a continuation of Skwarczyńska’s project, as well as its supplementation with new theoretical and research contexts, absent in pre-war reflection. "New theory of the letter" is divided into two parts, which are preceded by an extensive introduction, aimed at presenting Polish epistolographic research against the background of foreign work - their problematics, scope and research fields. A special place among them is reserved for theoretical and literary proposals, starting from "Theory of the letter", up to the latest concepts - Elżbieta Rybicka’s or Lucyna Marzec’s. Although they are just brief outlines, they constitute an important reference point for the whole proposed new theory of letters, which is modular in nature. The idea of replacing a comprehensive, uniform tool - the configuration of concepts and methods that are useful to a given block of epistolography - results from the conviction that a letter as a complex and multidimensional statement cannot be reduced to a strictly defined framework, identical for all letters regardless of their type or time of creation. It is the decision of the researcher, who takes into account the numerous conditions and context of a particular epistolary text, that conditions the choice of a given aspect of correspondence deemed as the most interesting; within this monograph, researchers will be able to get acquainted with many possible approaches to the issues useful in the analysis of letters going back to literary and linguistic tools, as well as concepts and methods developed within philosophy (personalist anthropology, philosophy of the mind, self-techniques) and social sciences (communication psychology, logotherapy, conversational analysis, or discourse analysis). The theory of letters proposed in this monograph is presented in detail in the first part of the work, divided into six chapters. The book opens with an overview of the previously used approaches and characteristic qualities of letters, which leads to the formulation of a new definition, constituting the basis for another relevant five perspectives. In further chapters, such issues as dialogue, subjectivity, self-creation, self-presentation, consciousness and unconsciousness, representation, pragmatism and performativity of the letter, self-reflexivity, self-techniques and the need and will of meaning appear. These contexts, so far often unused in the analysis of epistolography, are a practical realization of Skwarczyńska’s postulate to analyze letters in an interdisciplinary way and construct separate research methods for this genre. The second part of the monograph, in turn, brings six autonomous interpretative studies, using previously proposed theories and research methods in the analysis of letters of such authors as Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Słowacki, Zygmunt Krasiński, Maria Konopnicka, Zbigniew Herbert or Sławomir Mrożek. A comprehensive, theoretical-interpretive view of the letter as one of the oldest literary genres, invariably accompanying a literate man, documenting his struggle with reality and constituting a cultural "mirror" in which the subject leaves his own - forever embedded - reflection is a kind of "new opening" in epistological research, and at the same time an invitation to a lively academic debate on the place, function and meaning of letters both in the humanities and social sciences.

L’ouvrage présent fait référence avec son titre à la "Théorie de la lettre" - une thèse d’habilitation de Stefania Skwarczyńska publiée en 1937 à Lvov, qui constitue jusqu’à aujourd’hui un point de référence lisible pour tous les chercheurs en épistolographie en Pologne. La monographie de Mme Skwarczyńska, qui est en réalité un grand projet de recherche, précurseur dans son dimension théorique (aspect interdisciplinaire, catégorie "littérature appliquée", définition et types de lettre) et constituant une interprétation historique et littéraire (approche comparative, premier aperçu de l’histoire de la lettre, nombreux exemples de lettres de diverses époques), n’a pas été mise à jour dans les années à venir, bien que restant la seule - parmi les rares ouvrages polonais consacrés à l’épistolographie - qui soit lue par des spécialistes en domaines divers, mais intéressés à des lettres. Ce vide devrait être comblé par cette monographie - une continuation du projet Skwarczyńska - par son complément de nouveaux contextes théoriques et scientifiques absents dans la réflexion d’avant-guerre. "La Nouvelle théorie de la lettre" est divisée en deux parties, précédées d’une introduction complète, qui vise à présenter la recherche épistolaire polonaise sur le contexte des travaux étrangers: leurs problèmes, leur portée et les problemes de recherche présents. Des propositions théoriques et littéraires prennent parmi eux une place particulière, avec la "Théorie de la lettre" pour commencer, et des conceptions les plus récentes - celles élaborées par Elżbieta Rybicka et Lucyna Marzec - pour terminer. Bien qu’elles aient un caractère sommaire et une forme de dissertation brève, elles constituent un point de référence important pour l’ensemble de la nouvelle proposition de théorie de la lettre, qui est de nature modulaire. L’idée de remplacer un outil complet et uniforme par une configuration de conceptions et de méthodes utiles à un bloc épistolaire donné découle de la conviction qu’une lettre, en tant qu’une expression complexe et multidimensionnelle, ne peut être réduite à une forme susceptible d’être fermée dans un cadre strictement défini, identique pour toutes les lettres, quelle que soit leur nature, type ou temps de création. Le choix d’un aspect de la correspondance, aspect considéré comme le plus intéressant dépend de la décision du chercheur, qui prend en compte les nombreuses conditions et le contexte d’un texte épistolaire particulier. Ainsi, dans le cadre de cette ouvrage, le chercheur est en mesure de se familiariser avec de nombreuses approches possibles aux problèmes pariculiers, utiles pour l’analyse des lettres et pour l’utilisation des techniques littéraires et linguistiques, ainsi que de concepts et de méthodes développés au sein de la philosophie (anthropologie personnelle, philosophie de l’esprit, technique de soi) et des sciences sociales (psychologie de la communication, logothérapie, analyse conversationnelle, analyse du discours). La théorie de la lettre proposée dans cet ouvrage est présentée en détail dans la première partie, divisée en six chapitres. Elle commence par une panorama d’ensemble des approches et caractéristiques de la lettre précédemment utilisés, ce qui conduit à la formulation d’une nouvelle définition, constituant la base de cinq autres aspects déterminant pour la lettre. Dans d’autres chapitres, apparaissent des thèmes tels que le dialogue, la subjectivité, la création de soi, la présentation de soi, la conscience et l’inconscience, la représentation, le pragmatisme et la performativité de la lettre, la réflexivité, les techniques de soi et le besoin et la volonté de sens. Ces contextes, qui jusqu’à présent n’étaient pas souvent utilisés dans l’analyse épistolaire, restent une concrétisation du postulat de Skwarczyńska d’analyser la lettre de façon interdisciplinaire et de construire des méthodes de recherche distinctes pour ce genre. La deuxième partie de l’ouvrage comporte six études interprétatives autonomes, qui s’appuient sur les théories et méthodes de recherche proposées précédemment avec l’analyse de lettres d’auteurs tels que Adam Mickiewicz, Juliusz Słowacki, Zygmunt Krasiński, Maria Konopnicka, Zbigniew Herbert ou Sławomir Mrożek. Une interprétation complète et théorique de la lettre en tant que l’un des genre littéraire le plus ancien, qui accompagne toujours un homme lettré, qui enregistre sa lutte avec la réalité et qui crée un "miroir" culturel dans lequel le sujet laisse pour toujour son image, demeure une sorte de "nouvelle ouverture" en recherches épistolaires, et en même temps une invitation à un débat scientifique sur la place, la fonction et le sens de la lettre dans les sciences humaines et sociales.
