Poe bezustannie tworzył historie, w których kobiety kończyły śmiercią. ,,Annabel Lee” prezentuje narratora mającego obsesję na punkcie swej zmarłej ukochanej. W opowiadaniu ,,Ligeia” narrator wielbi swoją ukochaną już za jej życia, ale to po jej śmierci rodzi się w nim na jej punkcie obsesja. Podczas gdy Ligeia może być rozumiana jako reprezentacja matki Poe, za postacią Roweny mogą stać jego matka zastępcza i żona Virginia. Obsesja Poe na punkcie alkoholu uwidoczniona jest w jego opowiadaniach ,,Czarny Kot” i ,,Żabi Skoczek”. W pierwszym z nich narrator przyznaje się do swojego uzależnienia. Alkohol przyczynił się do jego brutalnych przestępstw a jego maniakalne zachowanie i problemy cielesne mogą być powiązane z jego piciem. Zarówno Poe jak i narrator w trakcie upojenia doświadczali zmienionej osobowości. ,,Żabi Skoczek”, ostatnie z opowiadań Poe, ukazuje głównego bohatera jako ofiarę alkoholu. Pod koniec swojego życia autor mógł odmawiać odpowiedzialności za swoje picie i obarczać winą innych. W opowiadaniu wydaje się on usprawiedliwiać picie alkoholu bolesnym wspomnieniem ukochanych zmarłych. Poe zafascynowany również był motywem supernaturalnym. ,,Zagłada domu Usherów” ukazuje supernaturalne powiązanie między domem a bohaterami. Opowiadanie ukazuje także zainteresowanie Poe tematem wampiryzmu. W “Czarnym Kocie” uwidoczniona jest fascynacja autora tematyką czarów i demonizmu.

Poe consistently produced stories that sent women to graves. “Annabel Lee” presents the narrator’s obsession with his lost loved one. In “Ligeia” the narrator worships his beloved one while she is still alive but he becomes even more obsessed with her after her death. While Ligeia can be associated with Poe’s dead mother, Rowena can be seen as a representation of his foster mother and Virginia. Poe’s obsession with alcohol is presented in “The Black Cat” and “Hop-Frog”. In the former, the narrator admits his addiction. The liquor contributed to his violent crimes and his maniac style and bodily problems can be linked to drinking. Both Poe and the narrator experienced changed personality while intoxicated. Hop-Frog, the last of Poe’s tales, presents the main character as a victim of alcohol. At the end of his life, Poe could deny any responsibility for his drinking and put the blame upon others. In the story, he seems to excuse drinking habits on the painful memory of lost loved ones. Poe was also fascinated with the theme of supernatural. “The Fall of the House of Usher” presents Poe’s fascination with the theme of supernatural by depicting the supernatural link between the house and the family. The tale also reveals the author’s interest in the idea of vampirism. In “The Black Cat” Poe’s attraction to the notions of witchcraft and demonism is apparent.
