"Fire" and "Water" - Zofia Stryjeńska's creation of the elements

Niniejsza praca ma na celu omówienie i zanalizowanie pary obrazów autorstwa Zofii Stryjeńskiej, które przedstawiają żywioły ognia i wody. Płótna zostały wykonane na zamówienie Ministerstwa Spraw Zagranicznych w 1928 roku i były częścią wystroju wnętrz nowej siedziby poselstwa polskiego w Sofii, stolicy Bułgarii. W tekście znalazła się problematyka badań dotyczących samej Stryjeńskiej oraz odnalezione przez autorkę dane historyczne omawianych dzieł. Szczegółowy opis obu obrazów umożliwił zanalizowanie ich pod kątem zarówno ikonograficznym, jak i formalnym. W celu zinterpretowania treści przedstawionych scen oraz poszczególnych postaci autorka sięgnęła do wierzeń słowiańskich, które stanowiły jedno z głównych źródeł inspiracji twórczych artystki. Rozszerzeniem analizy formalnej „Ognia” i „Wody” jest odniesienie ich kompozycji do rozważań teoretycznych S. I. Witkiewicza. Omówione zostały także wybrane aspekty stylistyczne kompozycji oraz ich powiązanie z motywami sztuki ludowej. Zwrócono uwagę na szczególną relację dekoracyjności z ludowością, która charakteryzuje oba płótna. Powyższe zagadnienia pomogły autorce przedstawić treść i symbolikę omawianych prac.

This work aims to discuss and analyze a pair of paintings by Zofia Stryjeńska, which depict the elements of fire and water. The canvases were commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1928 and were part of the interior design of the new seat of the Polish mission in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. The text contains the issue of research on Stryjeńska herself and the historical data of the discussed works found by the author. A detailed description of both images made it possible to analyze them for both iconographic and formal aspects. In order to interpret the content of the presented scenes and individual characters, the author drew on Slavic beliefs, which were one of the artist's main sources of creative inspiration. An extension of the formal analysis of "Fire" and "Water" is to refer their compositions to the theoretical considerations of S. I. Witkiewicz. Selected stylistic aspects of the composition and their relationship with folk art motifs were also discussed. Attention was drawn to the special relationship between decorativeness and folk that characterizes both canvases. The above issues helped the author present the content and symbolism of the discussed works.
