The narratives "Młot" and "Przyjaciel" by Stanisław Lem in the context of posthumanism

Głównym celem pracy jest interpretacja opowiadań „Młot” i „Przyjaciel” Stanisława Lema w kontekście filozofii posthumanizmu. Utwory te przedstawiają kontakt maszyny z człowiekiem. Interpretacje tekstów o sztucznych istotach cechuje zazwyczaj antropocentryzm. Praca ta sprzeciwia się instrumentalizowaniu maszyn i za pomocą narzędzi stosowanych we współczesnych nurtach emancypacyjnych proponuje potraktowanie sztucznej inteligencji analogicznie do będących ich podmiotami i przedmiotami pozostałych ludzkich i nie-ludzkich innych. Kontakt z nie-metaforycznymi i nie-antropomorficznymi maszynami ma prowadzić do stawania się bohaterów i czytelników opowiadań nowymi, posthumanistycznymi podmiotami. Celem tego eksperymentu interpretacyjnego jest zbadanie, czy literatura science-fiction może zmienić nasze podejście do problemów współczesnego świata i przygotować nas na nieznane dylematy przyszłości. Metoda reinterpretacji zakorzenionych w kulturze kategorii takich, jak człowiek, życie, śmierć czy praca, charakterystyczna dla posthumanizmu, służy za środek do zmiany postrzegania technologicznych innych, a tym samym określenia nowych granic podmiotu ludzkiego.

The main aim of this thesis is to interpret the narratives “Młot” and “Przyjaciel” by Stanisław Lem in the context of the philosophy of posthumanism. These narratives deal with the topic of the contact between man and machine. Interpretations of texts about artificial beings are usually characterized by their anthropocentrism. This thesis tries not to instrumentalize the machines, however, by means of the concepts used by contemporary emancipatory movements, it treats artificial intelligence similarly to subjects and objects of these movements, human and in-human others. Contact with not metaphorical and not anthropomorphic machines should lead protagonists and readers to become the new, posthuman subjects. Therefore, the purpose of this interpretative experiment is to find out if science-fiction literature is able to change our approach to modern world dilemmas and prepare us for the unknown. Characteristic for the posthumanism method of reinterpretation of the categories rooted in culture, such as man, life, death or work, serves as means to change our perception of technological others and to define new boundaries for the human subject.
