The Characteristics of Jerzy Matuszkiewicz's music for the "Janosik" series directed by Jerzy Passendorfer

Niniejszą pracę poświęcono muzyce autorstwa Jerzego Matuszkiewicza do serialu “Janosik” w reżyserii Jerzego Passendorfera. Celem pracy jest ukazanie i scharakteryzowanie różnorodności środków i konwencji, którymi operował Jerzy Matuszkiewicz podczas tworzenia muzyki do serialu “Janosik”. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na obecność stylizacji muzyki ludowej oraz jazzowej, a przede wszystkim na określenie roli muzyki i jej związków ze stroną wizualną oraz wpływem na odbiór całego dzieła i przedstawionych w nim bohaterów. Niniejsza praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów – pierwszy z nich przybliża sylwetki twórców, omówiono w nim życiorysy reżysera, kompozytora, scenarzysty i aktorów występujących w serialu. Rozdział ten przybliża również legendę dotyczącą zbójnika Janosika, zawiera także opis poszczególnych odcinków. Rozdział drugi zawiera analizy deskryptywne wszystkich odcinków, a także opis i analizę głównych motywów wykorzystanych w serialu. W trzecim rozdziale pracy omówiono problemy związane z serialową czołówką, stylizacją muzyki ludowej, komizmem oraz muzyką jazzową, której brzmienie wykorzystano w serialu.

The present thesis is dedicated to Jerzy Matuszkiewicz's music created for “Janosik” series directed by Jerzy Passendorfer. The aim of this dissertation is to present and to characterize the diversity of means and conventions used by Jerzy Matuszkiewicz during the music creation for “Janosik” series. The particular attention has been given to the presence of mode of expression of folk and jazz music. Also, a lot of emphasis is put to define the role of music in the series, and its association with the visual aspect of the work, as well as its impact on the impression on the viewers, and the influence of the music on the characters’ personalities. This master thesis consists of three chapters – the first one provides information concerning the authors, and the biography of the director, the composer, the screenwriter and the actors starring in the series. Also, this chapter presents the legend of Janosik the robber and the description of particular episodes. The second chapter demonstrates the descriptive analysis of all the episodes, and the characterisation and the analysis of the main music motifs used in the series. The third chapter discusses problems related to the opening theme, the mode of expression of the comicality, folk music, and jazz music used in the series.
