Exploring Dialectal Features in Audiovisual Translation: A Comparative Analysis of the Film Chłopi, Based on W. Reymont’s Novel, and Its Spanish Adaptation En Nombre de la tierra.

Celem niniejszej pracy jest zbadanie przekładu warstwy leksykalnej dialogów występujących w hiszpańskiej wersji filmu Chłopi (w wersji hiszpańskiej En nombre de la tierra). Ze względu na silne zakorzenienie języka postaci w polskiej gwarze ludowej, przekład tego typu treści stanowi szczególne wyzwanie tłumaczeniowe. Analizując hiszpańską wersję filmu, starano się odpowiedzieć na pytanie, w jakim stopniu zachowuje ona charakter oryginału i czy skutecznie oddaje jego lokalny koloryt językowy.W badaniu przyjęliśmy metodę analizy porównawczej. Wybraliśmy sceny interesujące pod względem lingwistyczno-kulturowym, a następnie zestawiliśmy je z odpowiadającymi im scenami po hiszpańsku. Szczególna uwaga została poświęcona temu, jak tłumacz starał się oddać lokalny charakter wypowiedzi postaci oraz ich społeczne i emocjonalne nacechowanie. W analizie uwzględniono zastosowane przez tłumaczkę techniki tłumaczeniowe.Ponieważ problematyka przekładu dialektu w kinie od zawsze wydawała się nam niełatwym zadaniem, postanowiliśmy zbadać to zagadnienie, opierając się na adaptacji filmowej „Chłopów”, gdyż dzieło to, wedle naszej wiedzy, nie zostało do tej pory szerzej zanalizowane pod tym kątem. Jako że w tłumaczeniu najważniejsze pozostaje przekazanie treści utworu, w efekcie badań udało nam się potwierdzić, że oddanie mowy regionalnej w tłumaczeniu jest niezwykle trudne i wydaje się niemożliwe przeniesienie jej cech charakterystycznych w pełni na język obcy.

The aim of the thesis is to examine the translation of the lexical layer of dialect in the film ”The peasants” (in its Spanish version En nombre de la tierra, in polish version Chłopi) into spanish. Due to the deep roots of the characters’ language in Polish folk speech, translating this type of content poses a particular challenge. By analysing the Spanish version of the film, the study seeks to determine to what extent it preserves the original’s character and whether it effectively conveys its local and linguistic colour.The author adopted a comparative analysis method. Scenes of linguistic and cultural interest were selected and compared with their spanish counterparts. Special attention was paid to how the translator attempted to reflect the local flavour of the characters' speech, as well as their social and emotional tone. The analysis also considered the translation techniques used.Since the issue of translating dialects in cinema has always seemed to us a challenging task, we decided to investigate this topic based on the film adaptation of The Peasants, as to our knowledge, this work has not yet been widely analyzed from this perspective. Considering that the most important aspect of translation is conveying the content of the film, our research confirms that rendering regional speech in translation is extremely difficult and that it seems impossible to fully transfer its distinctive features into a foreign language.

El objetivo del presente trabajo es analizar la traducción de la capa léxica del dialecto en la película ”En nombre de la tierra” (en su versión polaca Chłopi). Debido al fuerte arraigo del lenguaje de los personajes en la lengua popular polaca, su traducción puede representar un desafío particular. Analizando la versión española de la película, intentamos responder a la pregunta de hasta qué punto se conserva el carácter del original y si transmite de manera eficaz su color local y lingüístico.En la estrategia de investigación adoptamos el método de análisis comparativo. Seleccionamos escenas interesantes desde el punto de vista lingüístico y cultural para compararlas con sus equivalentes en español. Prestamos especial atención a cómo la traductora intenta reflejar el carácter local de las expresiones de los personajes, así como su carga social y emocional. Además, tomamos en cuenta las técnicas de traducción empleadas.Como la problemática de la traducción de dialectos en el cine siempre nos ha parecido una tarea compleja, decidimos analizar este fenómeno basándonos en la adaptación cinematográfica de Los Campesinos, ya que, según nuestro conocimiento, esta obra no ha sido hasta ahora ampliamente estudiada desde esta perspectiva. Considerando que lo más importante en la traducción es transmitir el contenido de la obra, nuestra investigación confirma que reproducir el habla regional en otra lengua resulta sumamente difícil, y que parece imposible trasladar plenamente sus rasgos característicos a un idioma extranjero.
