The Nine-point Circle and its history

Głównym celem pracy jest przedstawienie historii okręgu dziewięciu punktów, zwanego również okręgiem Feuerbacha oraz omówienie różnych dowodów twierdzenia mówiącego, że spodki wysokości, środki boków i środki odcinków łączących ortocentrum z wierzchołkami trójkąta leżą na jednym okręgu. Ponadto w pracy wykazane są podstawowe własności okręgu dziewięciu punktów, w tym fakt, że środek tego okręgu, ortocentrum i środek okręgu opisanego na trójkącie leżą na jednej prostej nazywanej prostą Eulera. W kolejnej części pracy udowodnione jest twierdzenie Feuerbacha wraz z krótkim opisem historii tego twierdzenia. W ostatnim rozdziale znajduje się krótka charakterystyka litografowanego wykładu profesora Władysława Zajączkowskiego (prowadzonego na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim w roku akademickim 1880/81) razem z oryginałem tej części wykładu, która opisuje okrąg dziewięciu punktów.

This paper is devoted to the Nine-point Circle, its history and characteristic properties. The work is based mainly on the article “History of the Nine-point Circle’’ published by J. S. Mackay in 1892 and divided into five chapters. The first chapter contains the history of the Nine-point Circle, also called the Feuerbach Circle. The second chapter shows the auxiliary assertions, necessary for later work. The third described the different proofs of the theorem about the Feuerbach Circle and presents several properties of this interesting circle. In the next chapter the short history, statement and proof of the Feuerbach theorem are described. At the end of the paper we included the idea of the proof of this theorem which was lectured at the Jagiellonian University by Władysław Zajączkowski in XIXth century is presented.
