Anti-utopian motifs in Wacław Berent’s „Fachowiec”

Cel pracy stanowiła analiza powieści Wacława Berenta pt. „Fachowiec” pod kątem występujących w nim motywów antyutopijnych. Odniesienie do obaw związanych z rewolucją przemysłową, a także nastroju przełomu wieków XIX i XX, przy uwzględnieniu twórczości G. H. Wellsa oraz polskich antyutopistów, pozwoliło wykazać, iż stanowiły one również przedmiot zainteresowań Berenta. Ponadto porównanie z późniejszymi utopiami negatywnymi pokazało, iż koncepcje Berenta-debiutanta są prekursorskie wobec takich utworów jak; „My” E. Zamiatina, „Rok 1984” G. Orwella oraz „451° Fahrenheita” R. Bradbury’ego.

The purpose of the paper was to analyse Waclaw Berent’s novel “Fachowiec” for anti-utopian motifs. In that paper I have considered the anxiety related with industrial revolution and the atmosphere of the turn of the XIX and XX century. I also have referred to G. H. Wells and polish anti-utopists works, which allowed me to show that Berent have been sharing their concern. Furthermore comparison with later negative utopias showed, that Berent’s ideas are ground-breaking to such novels as; E. Zamiatin’s “My”, G. Orwell’s “Year 1984” and R. Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit’s 451”.
