The Geography and Politics of International Exhibitions at the CBWA “Zachęta” in the decade of the ’70s of the XX century

Tematem pracy jest analiza oficjalnej polityki kulturalnej Polski Ludowej w l.70 XX wieku, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem polityki zagranicznej PRL w kontekście programu wystaw międzynarodowych stołecznego Centralnego Biura Wystaw Artystycznych “Zachęta”. Badania zachowanego materiału archiwalnego pozwoliły uchwycić mapę sztuki związaną z geografią polityczną prezentowaną w salach ekspozycyjnych “Zachęty” oraz ukazać w jaki sposób władza była zainteresowana legitymizacją przez sztuki wizualne i kulturę artystyczną. Wykorzystanie wystawy jako medium przez władze PRL-u w latach siedemdziesiątych można rozpatrywać na wielu poziomach, a rekonstrukcja tych wydarzeń pozwoliła spojrzeć ponownie na specyficzne doświadczenie funkcjonowania sztuki w systemie komunistycznym. Niniejsza praca stanowi kronikę dekady, której wartością jest przede wszystkim ukazanie w jaki sposób badane prezentacje międzynarodowe starały się nie naruszyć stabilności systemu, jednocześnie realizując wizję globalnej integracji.

The subject of the thesis is the analysis of the official cultural politics of the People's Republic in Poland in the 1970s, with particular emphasis on the foreign policy of Polish People's Republic in the context of the international exhibition program of the “Zachęta” Central Bureau of Artistic Exhibitions in Warsaw. A study of preserved archival materials allows to capture a map of exhibition associated with political geography presented in “Zachęta” as well as a delineation of the intentions of the then-current government to legitimize itself through the visual arts and artistic culture. The instrumental use of the exhibition as a medium of the reigning government of the People’s Republic of Poland in the ’70s can be assessed on many levels and reconstruction of these events has allowed for a re-examination of the peculiarities specific to the functioning of art within the communist system. This work constitutes a chronicle of the decade, and its worth lies in the depiction of the methods used by the examined international presentations in their efforts not to infringe upon the stability of the communist system, while also carrying out a vision of global integration.
