Beginnings and Formation of American Ballet

Praca zawiera analizę amerykańskiego baletu, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem twórczości jego ojca, a mianowicie, George’a Balanchine’a. Celem dysertacji jest omówienie początków amerykańskiej sztuki baletowej i jej późniejszego procesu formowania. Praca podzielona jest na pięć rozdziałów. Pierwszy dostarcza ogólnej charakterystyki baletu – jego historii i podstawowych założeń estetycznych, którymi się rządzi. Kolejny rozdział poświęcony jest opisowi kierunków w amerykańskiej sztuce tanecznej do lat trzydziestych XX wieku: formie musicalowej oraz tańcowi nowoczesnemu. Sekcja ta ma za zadanie uwypuklić ówczesną tendencję do odrzucania baletu oraz marginalną pozycję tej sztuki na Nowym Kontynencie. Trzeci rozdział w całości poświęcony jest osobie Balanchine’a: jego życiu, twórczości artystycznej oraz szkole i zespołowi. Przedostatni rozdział to potwierdzenie wielkości wizji Balanchine’a, która ukształtowała współczesne amerykańskie środowisko baletowe. Ostatnia sekcja pracy skupia się na dzisiejszym sposobie obrazowania baletu przez amerykańskich producentów filmowych i telewizyjnych, umiejscawiając tę sztukę w kręgach kultury popularnej.

The thesis concerns the American ballet, with a special regard to the artistic contribution of its father, George Balanchine. This dissertation aims at analyzing the beginnings and formation of ballet in the United States. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first one deals with the overall history of ballet art and its basic aesthetic elements. The second section offers the description of major dance movements in America before the 1930s, including the musical forms and modern dance. The aim of this section is to establish the then ballet in the United States as a second rate form of art. Third chapter is focused entirely on Balanchine’s life, creative activity, ballet company and school. The penultimate section describes his legacy, establishing Balanchine as a major creative force in the formation of contemporary ballet art in America. The final and fifth chapter deals with the image of ballet offered by American film and television producers, placing it within the context of popular culture.
