The critical philosophy of Michel Foucault as a practice of freedom.

Celem pracy jest omówienie zagadnienia wolności w kontekście filozofii Michela Foucaulta. Punktem wyjścia uczyniono swoisty paradoks jego myśli: filozof, z jednej strony, opisuje jednostkę jako poddaną nieustającemu działaniu mechanizmów władzy, które ją kształtują, a z drugiej, poprzez projekt estetyki egzystencji, wprowadza możliwość jednostkowej, świadomej autokreacji. Relacja między jednostką a społeczeństwem może zostać ustalona po bliższemu przyjrzeniu się estetyce egzystencji, jako kontynuacji filozofii krytycznej Immanuela Kanta. Wolność będzie tu zatem rozpatrywana zarówno jako indywidualny projekt dystansowania się od narzuconych przez władzę kategorii, jak i problem polityczny.Pierwsza część pracy dotyczy warunków możliwości autonomii w kontekście władzy. Następnie opisano zwrot, jaki dokonał się w myśli Foucaulta oraz jego analizy praktyk siebie w kulturze antycznej. Pokazano w jaki sposób troska o siebie może stać się formą praktyki wolności, realizowaną w formie autonomicznego kreowania samego siebie. Trzeci i czwarty rozdział opisują stosunek Foucaulta do Immanuela Kanta – jego filozofii krytycznej w ogóle oraz konkretnych pism politycznych. Piąty rozdział pokazuje, w jaki sposób Foucault, korzystając z Baudelaire'a, przekształca projekt krytycznej ontologii nas samych w oryginalny projekt stwarzania samego siebie.W zakończeniu postawiono pytanie o emancypacyjny potencjał modelu filozofii krytycznej jako swoistej formy troski o siebie. Wykazano, że estetyka egzystencji może być traktowana jako projekt szerszej naprawy społecznej, zmierzającej do wyzwolenia jednostki od opresyjnych systemów. U podstawy tego projektu leży filozofia krytyczna.

The purpose of this thesis is to analyse the problem of freedom in the light of Michel Foucault’s philosophy. At the beginning, articles describes a peculiar paradox of Foucault’s thought: on one hand philosopher describes the individual as subjected to the constant actions of the mechanisms of power, which are shaping the human subject as an individual. On the other hand, through the concept of the aesthetics of existence, Foucault introduces the possibility of individual, conscious self-creation. The relationship between the individual and the society can be established after a closer look at the aesthetics of existence as a continuation of Immanuel Kant's critical philosophy. In following thesis freedom will therefore be considered both as an individual project of liberation oneself from the categories imposed by the power, as well as a political problem.The first part of the work concerns the conditions for the possibility of autonomy in the context of power. Secondly, the ‘the ethical turn’ of Foucault's thoughts and his analysis of the technologies of self in ancient culture, were described. It was shown how the “care of the self” can become a form of freedom practice, implemented in the form of autonomous self-creation. The third and fourth chapters describe Foucault's attitude towards Immanuel Kant - his critical philosophy in general and specific political writings. The fifth chapter shows how Foucault, using Baudelaire’s essay, transforms the project of critical ontology of ourselves into an original project of self-creation.Finally, the question was raised about the emancipator potential of the critical philosophy model as a form of self-care. It has been shown that the aesthetics of existence can be treated as a project of a broader social repair aimed at liberating the individual from oppressive systems. Critical philosophy lies at the heart of this project.
