The Title Character in Schnitzler's ‘Anatol’ - an Attempt at an Analysis

Celem niniejszej pracy jest literaturoznawcza analiza głównej i tytułowej postaci w dramacie Arthura Schnitzlera pod tytułem „Anatol”. Nić przewodnią badania stanowi teza o przedstawieniu przez pisarza zależności procesów psychicznych oraz tożsamości Anatola od jego otoczenia. Aby tę zależność uchwycić oprócz metod oraz wiedzy ściśle literaturoznawczych wykorzystano w pracy refleksje i spostrzeżenia pochodzące z socjologii, filozofii, psychologii i kulturoznawstwa ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem idei, które w wiedeńskim modernizmie były obecne. Badaniu poddano nie tylko słowa i zachowania Anatola, lecz także obecne w dramacie wątki warunkujące jego podmiotowość (tj. wątek prawdy i rzeczywistości) oraz dominujące w jego otoczeniu przekonania i postawy. Wyniki analizy potwierdzają postawioną tezę oraz wskazują, że problem podmiotowości postawiony w dramacie jest symptomatyczny dla epoki, w której powstał.

The aim of this thesis is a literary analysis of the main and title character in Arthur Schnitzler's drama ‘Anatol’. The central thread of the study is the thesis that Schnitzler depicts the dependence of Anatol's mental processes and identity on his environment. To capture this dependence, the thesis incorporates methods and insights from sociology, philosophy, psychology, and cultural studies, alongside traditional literary analysis, with a particular focus on ideas prevalent in Viennese modernism. The analysis examines not only Anatol's words and behavior but also the themes in the drama that condition his subjectivity (e.g., the theme of truth and reality) and the dominant beliefs and attitudes of his environment. The results of the analysis confirm the thesis and indicate that the problem of subjectivity addressed in the drama is symptomatic of the era in which it was created.

Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist eine literarische Analyse der Haupt- und Titelfigur in Arthur Schnitzlers Drama „Anatol". Der rote Faden der Studie ist die Darstellung der Abhängigkeit der psychischen Prozesse und der Identität von Anatol von seiner Umwelt. Um diese Abhängigkeit zu erfassen, wurden neben den Methoden und Erkenntnissen der reinen Literaturwissenschaft auch Überlegungen und Erkenntnisse der Soziologie, Philosophie, Psychologie und Kulturwissenschaft in die Arbeit einbezogen, wobei ein besonderer Schwerpunkt auf den Ideen der Wiener Moderne lag. Untersucht wurden nicht nur Anatols Worte und sein Verhalten, sondern auch die im Drama vorkommenden Themen, die seine Subjektivität bedingen (z. B. das Thema Wahrheit und Wirklichkeit), sowie die in seiner Umgebung vorherrschenden Überzeugungen und Haltungen. Die Ergebnisse der Analyse bestätigen die These und zeigen, dass das Problem der Subjektivität im Drama symptomatisch für die Epoche ist, in der es geschrieben wurde.
