Coming to Terms with the Inevitable: Strategies of Portraying Death and Mourning in Children's Literature through Selected Works

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza strategii literackich i wizualnych stosowanych w przedstawianiu śmierci i żałoby w literaturze dziecięcej oraz określenie ich funkcji estetycznych, edukacyjnych i terapeutycznych. Praca koncentruje się na współczesnych utworach dla dzieci w wieku od 3 do 12 lat, obejmując zarówno teksty polskie, jak i zagraniczne.W pracy podjęto próbę wskazania, w jaki sposób autorzy literatury dziecięcej wykorzystują różnorodne strategie narracyjne, stylistyczne i ilustracyjne do przedstawiania trudnych tematów, takich jak śmierć i żałoba, a także w jaki sposób dzieci na różnych etapach rozwoju odbierają i przetwarzają te treści. Analiza została osadzona w kontekście przemian społeczno-kulturowych, współczesnych badań literaturoznawczych, refleksji psychologii rozwojowej, badań nad procesem żałoby oraz ustaleń tanatopedagogiki.Część teoretyczna pracy obejmuje przegląd współczesnych badań dotyczących śmierci i żałoby jako zjawisk kulturowo-społecznych oraz omówienie założeń tanatopedagogiki. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono charakterystyce współczesnej literatury dziecięcej o tematyce tanatycznej, z uwzględnieniem najczęściej stosowanych strategii przedstawiania śmierci i żałoby. Analiza literatury naukowej wykazała, że takie książki pełnią funkcje nie tylko estetyczne i narracyjne, lecz także edukacyjne, terapeutyczne i wspierające rozwój emocjonalny dziecka.W dwóch kolejnych rozdziałach przeprowadzono szczegółową analizę wybranych utworów literackich i literacko-ilustracyjnych. Analiza obejmowała zarówno aspekty językowe takie jak narracja, użycie metafor, fabuła, charakterystyka bohaterów i sposób ukazania emocji związanych ze stratą, jak i wizualne środki przekazu. Badanie pozwoliło zidentyfikować strategie stosowane przez autorów w celu oswajania dzieci z tematyką śmierci, takie jak: metaforyczne przedstawienie śmierci, antropomorfizacja, odwołanie do procesualności natury, wprowadzenie postaci przewodnika oraz elementów rytuału żałoby w narracji.Analiza wykazała, że współczesne utwory literackie dla dzieci odgrywają istotną rolę w procesie tanatopedagogicznym, pełniąc funkcję terapeutyczną i wspierając rozwój emocjonalny młodych czytelników. Książki te umożliwiają dzieciom kształtowanie dojrzałego podejścia do rzeczywistości, uczą rozpoznawania i wyrażania emocji związanych ze stratą oraz wspierają rodziców i opiekunów w prowadzeniu rozmów o trudnych tematach w sposób adekwatny do wieku dziecka.

The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to analyze the literary and visual strategies employed in the depiction of death and mourning in children’s literature, as well as to examine their aesthetic, educational, and therapeutic functions. The study focuses on contemporary works intended for children aged 3 to 12, encompassing both Polish and international texts. This research investigates how authors of children’s literature utilize diverse narrative, stylistic, and illustrative strategies to address complex themes such as death and bereavement, and how children at different developmental stages perceive and process these themes. The analysis is situated within the broader context of socio-cultural transformations, contemporary literary scholarship, developmental psychology, grief studies, and the principles of thanatopedagogy. The theoretical section provides a comprehensive review of thanatopedagogy's contemporary research on death and mourning as socio-cultural phenomena and outlines the foundational concepts. Particularly, this attention is devoted to the characteristics of contemporary children’s literature addressing thanatological themes, with an emphasis on the most frequently employed strategies for representing death and grief. With that given, the literature review demonstrates that these works serve not only the aesthetic and narrative purposes but also educational, therapeutic, and emotional developmental functions.The following chapters comprise a detailed analysis of selected literary and literary-illustrative works. This analysis considers both linguistic aspects – including narrative structure, use of metaphors, plot development, character portrayal, and the depiction of emotions related to loss – and visual elements, such as illustrations. The study identifies strategies employed by authors to facilitate children’s engagement with the theme of death, including metaphorical representations of death, anthropomorphisms, references to the cyclical nature of life, the inclusion of guide characters, and the integration of mourning rituals within the narrative. The findings indicate that contemporary children’s literature plays a significant role within thanatopedagogical processes, functioning as a therapeutic medium and supporting the emotional development of young readers. Such literature enables children to cultivate a mature understanding of reality, develop the capacity to recognize and express emotions associated with loss, and provides parents and caregivers with resources for conducting age-appropriate discussions on sensitive topics.
