Collectivism vs Individualism and Power Distance in Three Generations of Poles

Celem pracy było zbadanie zmian, jakie zachodzą w kulturze polskiej w wymiarze kolektywizmu i indywidualizmu pionowego oraz poziomego (Triandis, 1995) oraz dystansu władzy (Hofstede, 1983 za Hofstede 2007). W badaniu użyty został kwestionariusz oparty na powyższych konstruktach (narzędzie własne, oraz adaptacja testu: Triandis & Gelfand, 1998). Przebadano 180 osób reprezentujących trzy pokolenia przedstawicieli kultury polskiej. Badania dotyczyły osób zamieszkałych w środowisku miejskim. Postawiono cztery hipotezy. Założono, że trzy pokolenia Polaków będą znacząco różnić się w badanych wymiarach oraz że pokolenia młodsze będą wykazywać się większym indywidualizmem niż starsze, natomiast kolektywizm będzie nasilony w mniejszym stopniu. Przyjęto, iż im młodsza generacja tym wystąpi niższy dystans władzy oraz że będą występowały różnice pomiędzy przedstawicielami przeciwnej płci. W efekcie badań osiągnięto większość spodziewanych rezultatów i potwierdzono słuszność postawionych hipotez. W celu potwierdzenia wszystkich korelacji należałoby kontynuować badania.

The aim of the research conducted was to observe changes in the culture of Poland due to dimensions of Collectivism and Individualism – vertical and horizontal (Triandis, 1995) and Power Distance (Hofstede, 1983, Hofstede 2007). The tool used was a questionnaire based on foregoing constructs (self – constructed tool and adaptation for Polish condition Triandis & Gelfand, 1998).One hundred and eighty people took part in the research - representing three generations of Polish culture. All participants were inhabitants of Polish cities." "There were four hypotheses established. It was assumed that three generations of Poles would differ on dimensions: younger generations presenting more individualist profile, and scoring lower than older on dimension of collectivism. It was presumed that younger Poles would have lower Power Distance and that there will be crucial differences between men and women. Most hypotheses were justified by the results. The research should be continued in order to confirm these findings.
